Drake University class analyzes campaign messages in 2016 election

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bUN-_1fPxA?rel=0&w=560&h=315] While Elon students are spending part of their winter term in Iowa to study the Iowa Caucus, students at Drake University in Des Moines are also studying this major statewide event. Drake University offers the winter term class "Strategic Messaging and the Iowa Caucus." Sophomore Evan Guest is one student participating in the class. Guest says the class goes to various political events across the state and keeps a class blog to analyze the messages of each candidate. This will be the first presidential election Guest will be able to caucus for.

Undercard debate candidates share thoughts on education

Throughout the course of the Jan. 14 Republican undercard debate, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum expressed much opposition against the Obama administration on a host of issues.

CREDE leads discussion on racial privilege

Carly Fiorina greets supporters at event honoring new legislative year

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina stopped by the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines to attend a welcome back reception for the Iowa State legislature. While Fiorina did not give a speech at the event, she did pose for pictures with supporters while encouraging them to take part in the Caucus on February 1st. Elon Local News was able to speak with Fiorina at the event about her plans for student debt. "Well the first thing I'm going to do is get the government out of the student loans business," Fiorina said. She claimed that the federal government took over the student loan business following the passing of the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare.

Dr. Ben Carson brings "We the People" town hall meeting to Jefferson, IA

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry2lNtcXA5s?rel=0&w=560&h=315] Presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson held a town hall meeting today at Abundant Life Ministries in Jefferson, Iowa. Carson told the audience to encourage their family and friends not to specifically vote for him, but to vote for anyone on the conservative ticket. He noted having another progressive as president would be detrimental for the country's future. Carson encouraged the audience to think ahead with the future generations in mind. "We have to start thinking what are we going to do for all our children and grandchildren and all those after that" he said. Carson referenced the Bible's view on taxation while explaining his14.9% flat corporate and household tax rate. A nurse in the audience asked Carson about his plans for healthcare reform.

United States Conference of Mayors calls on candidates to focus on Urban issues

DES MOINES -- In the hours before "The Iowa Brown and Black Forum," a minority focused forum featuring the three major Democratic presidential candidates, the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) held a press conference where it said urban issues are American issues. "The significant majority of Americans live in cities and metropolitan economies as well as the fact that the vast majority of our gross domestic product comes from those cities," Columbia, South Carolina Mayor Stephen Benjamin said. Baltimore Mayor and USCM President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Benjamin, Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales, Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie and USCM CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran all spoke at the event. "We represent all people and we want to hear real reasons for real problems and we want to hear candidates address things that really are meaningful to all the people in this country," Cownie said.

GLC, CREDE host annual Kiki Ball

Late Night Elon collaborated with the Gender & LGBTQIA Center to host the annual Kiki Ball celebration. Inspired by LGBTQIA ballroom culture, the event is historically centered around queer and trans people of color and serves as a way to honor diversity in expression within LGBTQIA communities. The evening featured music, a stage, and a panel of judges, including an Elon alum, David Carter, who was excited to see the event come together.

‘Being first’: Elon’s Black Solidarity Conference hosts first keynote panel

The Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education hosted the 12th annual Black Solidarity Day Conference where students, faculty and staff, and community members gathered together in McKinnon Hall to discuss topics on allyship, anti-racism, anti-black racism, wellness in Black communities, Blackness in a global context, intersectionality in Black communities and socio-political activism.
