Jeffrey Cook's reaction to father being 2015 commencement speaker

Dad, political correspondent and commencement speaker. All three titles describe Elon's 2015 Commencement speaker, Charlie Cook. But there will be one graduating student in the audience who calls him first and foremost, dad. Jeffrey Cook is a senior strategic communications major who said he's thankful that his dad was chosen as this year's speaker. "I think it's going to be a great memory," said Cook.

Death of Elon junior Trent Stetler

Article updated 5:50 p.m. According to an email sent Sunday Jan. 11 from Dean of Students Smith Jackson, Elon junior Trent Stetler has died. Dean Jackson's email says the Burlington police are still investigating, but say Stetler appears to have taken his own life. Elon Local News spoke to Dean Jackson Sunday night.

Shooting struggles bury Elon as the Phoenix hosts Hofstra

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiK0RmmYSXI&feature=youtu.be Shooting woes and porous perimeter defense haunted the Elon University Men's basketball team all night as Colonial Athletic Association foe Hofstra shot lights out from downtown to leave Alumni Gym with a 79-61 win on Saturday night. Elon's guard combo of four-time CAA Rookie of the Week Elijah Bryant and junior Tanner Samson combined to shoot just 4-of-26 from the field, including a 3-of-16 clip from beyond the three-point line as the Phoenix fell to 10-7 (2-2 CAA) on the season. "We didn't get enough open shots," Elon head coach Matt Matheny said.

Hundreds attend Stuart Scott's funeral in Raleigh

The funeral for longtime ESPN anchor Stuart Scott was held Saturday morning at the Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh. Scott, who grew up in Winston-Salem and attended UNC Chapel Hill, lost his battle to cancer Sunday Jan.

Elon women's tennis loses opener to fourth-ranked UNC 6-1

The Elon University women’s tennis team opened up their season on Friday, Jan 9 against the fourth-ranked University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Freshman Kamilla Beisenova’s 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) victory over freshman Tar Heel Maggie Grace proved to be the lone win for the Phoenix as Elon fell 6-1 to UNC at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, NC. It was tough day all around for Elon as the five other matches played by the Phoenix were not very close. The young squad, led by freshman Kirsten Ward at the top singles position, could not seem to find solid footing against the top five Tar Heels as Ward fell 6-0, 6-0 in a rather quick match against UNC’s eighth ranked sophomore Jamie Loeb. Following Ward for the Phoenix was senior Barbara Lazarova in the number two singles match.

Column: Elon rides offensive freedom

Three times during Thursday night’s men’s basketball game, Elon University freshman guard Elijah Bryant took the ball up the floor, and without looking to pass, stepped up and took a 3-pointer. And all three times, he made the shot. Elon coach Matt Matheny gave his offense some more freedom as the Phoenix topped the College of William & Mary 85-79.

Elon beats William & Mary 85-79 in first CAA home victory

Freshman guard Elijah Bryant entered in to Thursday’s match up against the William and Mary University Tribe having been named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the fourth time. He played huge dividends for the Phoenix as it took home its first home CAA victory in a win over the Tribe by a final score of 85-79. The freshman led the team in scoring with 25 total points, 19 of which came in the second half alone.

Bryant fuels comeback as Elon beats William and Mary in CAA home opener

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aWCOqkIZMg&feature=youtu.be Down by seven with with 7:13 to go, Elon freshman Elijah Bryant went on a tear, scoring 16 points over the remaining time to spark a comeback and ignite the Alumni Gym crowd in an 85-79 win over William and Mary in the inaugural Colonial Athletic Association home game for the Phoenix. Elon outscored William and Mary by 13 over the final 5:36 of the game, coming away with point on 13 of its last 14 possessions of the game. "Our guys made some big shots and just enough plays defensively to battle back and get the victory," Elon Head Basketball Coach Matt Matheny said.

Elon releases 2015 football schedule

The Elon University football team released its 2015 schedule on Thursday, Jan. 8. The schedule will welcome eight teams from the Colonial Athletic Association to Rhodes Stadium as the Phoenix will enter in its second year as a member of the conference. Elon opens up with the season with a trip to Winston-Salem on Sept.

The Elon University Men's Basketball Team saw its four-game win streak come to an immediate close as Towson jumped ahead early and held off a furious Phoenix comeback to leave SECU Arena with a 57-53 win on Monday, Jan.
