Elon hosts award-winning poet

Phil Kaye, the only two-time recipient of the National College Poetry Slam award, opened his performance in Whitley Auditorium Thursday evening by explaining how he began to write his poem, “Surplus.” The Liberal Arts Forum at Elon University brought the award-winning poet to campus for a spoken word performance as the first event of the spring semester. “I am not a strong boy, but I am trying to learn what it means to build,” Kaye said. He then introduced himself to the audience. “I’m going to tell you some stories — some bad jokes.

The Oak House bartender cited for selling alcohol to underage buyer

A bartender at Elon's The Oak House was cited for "selling a malt beverage" to a person under the age of 21 after Elon Town Police say they conducted an alcohol compliance check on February 5. According to the Elon Police report, the underage participant was sold a beer without being asked to provide identification. Phil Smith, owner of The Oak House, said he has met with each employee to discuss the importance of checking IDs. "It is our policy to only serve alcoholic beverages to those allowed by state law," Smith said.

A prized basketball recruit makes his visit to Elon University, and as the coaching staff tries to schmooze him and his parents as best they can, the group arrives at Alumni Gym. They walk into the arena where the recruit would be playing his home games for the next four years should he decide to attend Elon.

Men's tennis wins three straight at home

It was never going to be easy to duplicate last year’s success. In 2014, the Elon University men’s tennis team won 19 matches, both the Southern Conference regular and post-season championships and swept both player and coach of the year honors. With six losses to open the season, it appeared the Phoenix was headed for a period of regression.

As the losses pile up, Elon University    men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny decided to look to the future. Last Saturday, the Phoenix lost for the 10th time in its last 11 games, an 86-75 shortcoming to hot-shooting James Madison University.

Offense highlights series win over Penn State

The Elon University baseball team opened up the 2015 season with an impressive debut from its offense in a three-game series against the Penn State University Nittany Lions. After scoring 34 runs, the Phoenix sits undefeated at 3-0. Elon swept Penn State with an offensive effort that yielded 16, 11 and seven runs in three games, respectively. “We were very good offensively,” said head coach Mike Kennedy following Elon’s first victory over the Nittany Lions.

Samson breaks 3-point record as Elon falls to College of Charleston

The Elon University men’s basketball team has dropped its seventh straight following a 77-63 loss to the College of Charleston. Junior guard Tanner Samson broke Elon’s single season three-pointer record with his six three’s, but it was not enough to top the College of Charleston. Having tied Jack Isenbarger’s record going to the matchup at the TD Arena, the Littleton, Colorado native hit his 83rd three of the season with 10:39 remaining in the first half to cut Elon’s deficit to just two at 16-14. Samson kept the Phoenix in the game early scoring 17 of his 22 points coming in the first half.

Job Interview Question-Answer is a free interview prep app that gives the user the chance to try a virtual interview before sitting down for the real thing. The user can pick from a list of a few typical interview questions, an interview coach asks the question and then the app connects to the camera in your phone so that you can record your answer.

Elon's losing streak stretches to seven in loss at Charleston

The Elon University men's basketball team's losing streak continued on Wednesday night as the College of Charleston used a hot shooting hand to down the Phoenix 77-63. The loss is Elon's seventh straight, and its 11th in its last 12 games. Much like in the pair's last contest, a 66-50 Charleston win at Alumni Gym, Cougars guard Canyon Barry put on a show.
