Jennifer Diane Esposito, a 20-year-old junior and member of the women’s track and field team, was arrested early Tuesday morning on a simple assault charge.

Esposito struck the victim with a closed fist, per the Alamance County Clerk of Court. The victim, a male student, was reported to have scratches on his face, neck, back and arms.

The incident occurred at Esposito's Crest apartment. She wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to police reports.

Esposito met her $500 bond and was released Tuesday.

"Jennifer has been suspended from the team for a violation of team rules," said Dan Wyar, Elon director of communications for athletics, in a text Thursday.

Esposito, from Mansfield, Massachusetts, is a hurdler and sprinter for the Elon track team. She won the Southern Conference outdoor championship in the 400-meter hurdles, setting a school record with her time of 59.60. Esposito was named Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Track Athlete of the Week on March 24, winning the 400-meter hurdles and helping the Phoenix to a crown in the 4x400-meter relay at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
