Drake University offers the winter term class "Strategic Messaging and the Iowa Caucus." Sophomore Evan Guest is one student participating in the class. Guest says the class goes to various political events across the state and keeps a class blog to analyze the messages of each candidate. This will be the first presidential election Guest will be able to caucus for.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina stopped by the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines to attend a welcome back reception for the Iowa State legislature. While Fiorina did not give a speech at the event, she did pose for pictures with supporters while encouraging them to take part in the Caucus on February 1st. Elon Local News was able to speak with Fiorina at the event about her plans for student debt. "Well the first thing I'm going to do is get the government out of the student loans business," Fiorina said. She claimed that the federal government took over the student loan business following the passing of the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare.

Carson told the audience to encourage their family and friends not to specifically vote for him, but to vote for anyone on the conservative ticket. He noted having another progressive as president would be detrimental for the country's future. Carson encouraged the audience to think ahead with the future generations in mind. "We have to start thinking what are we going to do for all our children and grandchildren and all those after that" he said. Carson referenced the Bible's view on taxation while explaining his14.9% flat corporate and household tax rate. A nurse in the audience asked Carson about his plans for healthcare reform.
