Men's tennis breezes into CAA semifinals with shutout of Hofstra

The Elon University men’s tennis team cruised past Hofsta University 4-0 in the quarter-finals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tennis championship April 22 from the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The Phoenix won each of its singles matches, winning in straight sets at the top four singles positions to advance to tomorrow’s semi-finals. Petar Tomic clinched the victory for the Phoenix without dropping a single point 6-0, 6-0.

Women's tennis moves on to CAA semis with win over Drexel

WINSTON-SALEM — The Elon University women’s tennis team defeated Drexel University 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship Tournament Friday afternoon. “We were pushed against Drexel a lot,” said head coach Elizabeth Anderson.

Total Sorority Move responds to Sigma Kappa's Actual Sorority Move campaign

Instagram and Facebook feeds were filled with images of college women in lab coats or with books in hand with the hashtag #ActualSororityMove (ASM) on April 19. Elon Univeristy’s Kappa Zeta chapter of Sigma Kappa launched the ASM campaign in a Facebook post beginning with “Dear Total Sorority Move (and anyone else), This is a message for you...” The post went on describing the chapter was a group of real, passionate, smart women and are not what a website defines a sorority as. Sororities as a whole face a variety of stigmas such as having a certain appearance, paying for friendships and being more focused on partying than academia. Sigma Kappa tried to go beyond this, according to junior Amanda Steinman, a member of Sigma Kappa  who helped organize the campaign. “We are a multidimensional group of women, we have passions and dreams and goals, we fight for gender equality, we work together to lift one another up, we cannot fit a mold or be put into boxes,” said a statement from the Kappa Zeta chapter. Members of various chapters of Sigma Kappa as well as other sororities joined in and posted photos explaining how they were individuals while still being proud sorority sisters.

Election is rigged against Sanders, Trump

Wyoming is the least populous state. With just 29 Republican and 18 Democratic delegates in the caucuses and three Electoral College votes, it carries very little significance in the 2016 presidential election. But results from the April 9 Democratic caucuses reflect a larger issue of voter disenfranchisement.

In the last few weeks, Elon Dining unveiled new takeout boxes with large orange letters on the top, reading “Compost.” These new lables serve to remind students that the boxes are compostable, just one of many initiatives used to encourage students to live sustainably.

SGA unanimously passes resolution against HB2

SGA unanimously passed a resolution against the controversial House Bill 2 at its meeting Thursday night. All 30 members of the Senate who were present approved the resolution. "I thought it would pass, but I wasn't expecting unanimous," SGA President and junior Kyle Porro said.

Q&A: Elon trustee enjoys minor league ownership

Elon University gave an honorary doctorate to Wes Elingburg, PhD, at its Spring Convocation March 31. Elingburg retired as chief financial officer (CFO) at LabCorp in 2005 and has served on Elon’s Board of Trustees since 2005, spending time as chair of the board from 2010 to 2012. He and his wife, Cathy, have given to Elon on numerous occasions, and helped develop the internship program between Love School of Business students and LabCorp. But when he retired from LabCorp, Elingburg found himself looking for something new to do.

Tennis teams on fire before CAA Tournament

As all of the schools in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) arrive on Elon’s campus, the Elon University men’s and women’s tennis teams enter the CAA Championships with some striking similarities. Both teams are on fire. The men’s team has won nine of its last 10 matches, with the lone loss a close defeat to conference foe College of Charleston.

​Elon’s Global Film Series finishes out semester with showing of “The Harvest / La Cosecha”

On Tuesday Evening, Elon University’s Global Neighborhood film series aired its last film, “The Harvest / La Cosecha.” This year, films were held in the Global Commons Media Room and the series theme was Food: The Culture, Politics, and Ethics of Eating. This award-winning documentary “The Harvest / La Cosecha” explores the theme of child labor while following the lives of three migrant children who work in the agriculture industry with their parents. Zulema, a 12-year-old migrant worker, has picked crops with her mom since she was just 6 years old.

Elon addresses campus parking issue

Even before the announcement of an expansion to the Love School of Business, students complained about parking. Now that construction is slotted to take place in the McMichael parking lot for the new building, there are concerns that student parking on campus will be even more scarce.

Former Elon University student arrested for sexual exploitation charge

A Burlington man, who previously attended Elon University, was arrested April 21 and charged with four counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Nikolaos Alexander Fotiou, 18, was taken to the Alamance County Detention Center and is being held there under no bond, as of April 24. According to a Burlington Police Department press release, the Invictus Task Force aided with the investigation.

Meet Elon University’s 2026 Lumen Prize winners

Fifteen students have been selected to receive $20,000 to support their mentored research and projects for the next two years as a part of the Lumen Prize. The 2026 Lumen Scholar winners will work closely with their mentors on their projects during their junior and senior years.
