Phoenix takes down Citadel 12-3

The Elon University baseball team defeated the The Citadel Bulldogs 12-3 in Charleston, South Carolina Friday, March 6. In a game that was held scoreless for two innings, the Phoenix scored two runs in the third inning off a 2 RBI single from junior utility playerJoey Tomko to score sophomore infielder Kory Shumate and senior outfielder Quinn Bower from second and third base.

Elon wins overtime thriller against Towson in first round of CAA Tournament

BALTIMORE — The Elon University men’s basketball team got off to a fast start in its inaugural tournament game in the CAA. But it came down to what it did in the end. After hitting a surge of 3-pointers throughout the game, the Phoenix held on to oust the Towson University Tigers, a team the Phoenix hadn’t beaten in two prior tries this season, 74-69 in overtime of a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament opening round game on Friday, March 6 at Royal Farms Arena. “Towson is tough and they fought us until the end,” Elon head coach Matt Matheny said.

Elon survives Towson to advance to CAA quarterfinals

With two seconds left in regulation and the game knotted at 62 apiece, Elon senior guard Austin Hamilton launched an open jumper from the free throw line to win the game, but it fell just short, hitting the front of the rim, the backboard and teasing the Elon bench before it fell off the rim. "It didn't go in, we wanted it to go in and avoid overtime, but that's just the way the ball falls sometimes," Hamilton said.

Kappa Sigma new member activities suspended

All new member activities in Elon University’s Kappa Sigma, Lambda-Lambda chapter have been suspended, according to an email from Smith Jackson, vice president for student life. Jackson said the suspension was in response to an investigation involving new members in the fraternity who were found by police in a Virginia cemetery early in the morning March 4. When the students were approached they told the police they were there to pay their respects. The cemetery in Abingdon, Virginia– a town of around 8,000 people that is approximately three hours northwest of Elon – is home to one of Kappa Sigma’s founders. Jackson said the group did not damage property but was cited for trespassing in the cemetery. This marked the third incident in four months involving an Elon fraternity. In November, Sigma Pi was issued a three-year suspension for hazing and Pi Kappa Phi is currently under investigation for alleged hazing.

Alva J. Sizemore, Jr. named Town of Elon fire chief

Alva J. Sizemore, Jr. has been hired as the Town of Elon's new fire chief, the town announced Thursday. Sizemore, Jr., whose official title is the Director of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services, will start March 23. "I look forward to having Alva join the Town of Elon and becoming a member of our team," Town Manager Richard White said in a statement. Sizemore, Jr.

Elon's engineering program grows

A five-year engineering program at Elon University is in the works. The new program will allow students to stay at Elon for the entirety of their engineering degree, rather than transfer after three years, which is how the program works now. Elon’s engineering department currently operates under a dual-degree program: students complete three years of their degree at Elon and two years at a partner institution.

‘Romeo and Juliet’ gets a 1970s revival in McCrary Theatre

Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” may be centuries old, but Elon University’s spring production brings it into a new era, 1970s Italy, complete with disco music, dance numbers and a cast that mirrors the age of its audience. The idea came in January of 2025, when Professor Julian Stetkevych, director of the spring play, was listening to disco music.

Chemical spill at Koury Fieldhouse restricts area, delays lacrosse game

A chemical spill from containers used to clean athletic gear created carbon dioxide at the entrance to the Koury Fieldhouse on Saturday morning, according to Elon University spokesperson Eric Townsend.Townsend said remnants from the containers reacted with nearby pine straw and combined to create the gas. Townsend also said an odor was reported. At 9:11 a.m. on April 4, Elon Campus Security and Police told community members that there was an ongoing investigation at the Koury Fieldhouse, according to an E-Alert. An additional E-Alert, released at 10:56 a.m., explained emergency personnel were on-site assisting with clean-up efforts, and parts of Koury Fieldhouse will remain restricted. Normal activities on the athletic fields are safe to resume.
