The Elon University men’s tennis team defeated Davidson College 4-3 on Thursday to capture its 12th straight victory over its in-state rival.

The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Elon seniors Brian Kowalski and Stefan Fortmann defeated Davidson freshman Jack Raizzi and junior Evan Watkins 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while Elon senior Jordan Kaufman and junior Robert Lindgren defeated Davidson sophomores Jordan Hart and J.B. Gough 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

The Phoenix’s doubles play proved to be the difference as the two sides split the six singles matches at three apiece. Fortmann and Kowalski earned wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles respectively and Kaufman also earned a straight-set win for the Phoenix from the No. 2 position.

With the victory, Elon improves to 8-10 overall. The Phoenix will play for the final time at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday when it hosts the University of North Carolina at Charlotte at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
