Today, while actively perusing the addictively popular website Pinterest (if you haven’t heard of it until now, heed my warning of its time-sucking nature), I came across a shirt reading “The book was better.” Admittedly, I chuckled a bit at the phrase, but after brief amusement, it got me thinking.

Intriguing content despite fewer pages

Our paper is short this week, but it’s not lacking in content. It was quite interesting to explore the prevalence of digital technology in the classroom. Considering the campus is so wired, it’s somewhat surprising to talk to professors that don’t support the total integration of technology in the classroom. At times, I certainly find my laptop to be a distraction during class time, and I understand why one might limit laptop usage.

Women’s contributions to society cannot be crammed into 30 days

Women throughout history have made unparalleled contributions to our society, contributions that have benefited both women and men.Their efforts are noticeable within our society every day, in fields ranging from politics to science, education and health care. And yet, the daily contributions of these women to society are annually shortchanged and shepherded into a disproportionately small amount of time designated to honor them. Women's History deserves more attention than it currently receives.

Sunshine Day expands reach, markets to students

Few can shed light on the significance of Sunshine Day and how it relates to their rights as citizens. “In the past, we’ve had dismal statistics in the past about the general understanding of North Carolina Law by North Carolinians,” said Brooke Barnett, executive director of the Elon University’s Sunshine Center of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition and associate professor of communications. This year, the Sunshine Center again hosted Sunshine Day, an annual event organized to emphasize the importance of government transparency and the freedom of information. [quote]I think it’s important that everyone has access to public records and even more important that records can be accessed electronically. -Elon senior Julia Murphy[/quote] More than 10 government experts came to Elon March 14 to speak about the positive aspects of North Carolina government and its policy regarding access to public records. “Every year I’m routinely told that this information is just for journalists,” said Barnett.

Injuries, lack of hitting derail Phoenix against Samford

For perhaps the first time this season, the Elon University softball team must deal with a little adversity. The Phoenix (17-7, 6-3 Southern Conference) lost two of its three games against Samford University last weekend and fell further behind the two teams ahead of them in the conference standings. The three-game series was marred by a severe lack of hitting.

Women’s golf competes in two events The Elon women’s golf team had two strong showings in the past two weeks. In the Low Country Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., which finished March 26, the Phoenix finished fourth out of 15 teams with a 627 (318-309). Senior Virginia Mayer finished tied for 10th with a 154 (79-75), while junior Martyna Mierzwa (85-73) and freshman Kristi Ingram (77-81) shot 158 to tie for 16th. At the Pinehurst Challenge March 18-20, Mierzwa finished sixth individually with a one-over 217 (70-72-75), her best score of the 2011-2012 season, to help the Phoenix to a 13th-place finish with a 919 (307-302-310). Women’s tennis improves to 4-2 in SoCon Sophomore Frida Jansaker continued her stellar season against Georgia Southern University in Southern Conference women’s tennis action March 26, helping the Phoenix to a 6-1 victory over the Lady Eagles.

Playing small, baseball team hits stride with key wins

Twenty-five games into the 54-game season, the Elon University baseball team is in the sludge of the schedule, grinding out games against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents and playing tough extra-inning matchups against Southern Conference foes. Approximately halfway through the season, junior outfielder Niko Fraser said his team could go either way. “I think that we have the potential to be extremely good, but we have the potential to be extremely average,” he said.

Israel parties during annual Purim celebrations

For any unassuming American, looking at an Israeli street during the holiday of Purim would be nearly indistinguishable from a Halloween party in the United States, that is except for the smell of falafel wafting above the heads of costume-clad adults and children looking on as street performers roam about and music from a concert reaches the furthest corners of the city. It doesn’t matter if you know what you’re looking at or not, one thing is for certain: Purim is a holiday for party-goers. Technically, the Jewish holiday commemorates the story of Esther and her uncle Mordecai, who convinced Esther to sway King Ahasuerus to not proceed with the plan presented by his adviser Haman to kill all of the Jews in the land. Purim is a celebration of a triumph over anti-Semitism. In today’s world, it has become an opportunity to have a good time.

Elon University dances for a cause

Elon University’s Alumni Gym was transformed into a sea of energy April 11 as the community gathered for the 2026 Elonthon. The six-hour dance marathon, one of Elon’s many philanthropic events, brought students together to raise over $47,000 for Duke Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for children's hospitals in the U.S. and Canada.
