U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in his sleep last night at age 79 while visiting Texas. According to CNN, President Obama plans on nominating a replacement "as soon as possible." However, Obama will have a challenging time nominating a new member to the court as the senate is Republican-controlled and it is an election year. Dean and Professor of Law at Elon University's School of Law, Luke Bierman, released a statement regarding the passing of Justice Scalia. S.C. Senator urges Millennials to consider bipartisan candidates

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Sen. Lindsey Graham, on the campaign trail endorsing former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, said Saturday before the GOP Debate that Millennials need to consider how a commander-in-chief would cooperate with both parties when choosing a candidate to support. “If you can’t find a president who can work with both Democrats and Republicans, your generation is going to suffer,” he said. Graham, who ended his bid for the presidency in December, was in South Carolina this week campaigning with Bush. Burnett, Baucom lead women's basketball to rout of Towson

The Elon University women’s basketball team rode a strong first quarter to its third straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win, a 80-58 victory over Towson University Friday night. Coming off her game winning shot against Delaware, sophomore guard Shay Burnett had a game-high 19 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Freshman Starts social justice Living Learning Community

A new student-led Living Learning Community (LLC) called the Hall for Change will offer residents opportunities to discuss current events, raise awareness of social justice issues and participate in service. Freshman Amy Belfer was inspired to create a place for Elon University students to come together to learn more about what is happening on campus, in the local community and internationally. Belfer said she realized the university did not have a social justice house like other universities.

Men's basketball keeps close but falls at UNCW

The Elon University men’s basketball team stayed within five points of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in the final seven minutes of the game, but could not take the lead, dropping 86-82 Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Phoenix cut the deficit to one at four different moments in the second half and led for a grand total of 15 seconds in the game. The Seahawks were able to keep Elon away, answering nearly every Elon basket with a basket on the other end to extend their win streak to a school-record 10 straight victories. “We’re a better team now than when we got [to Trask Coliseum],” said head coach Matt Matheny, who turned 46 Thursday.

Column: Experience should benefit women’s lacrosse team

The Elon University women’s lacrosse team isn’t young anymore. At least, not in terms of experience. The Phoenix enters its third year of competition (its second in the Colonial Athletic Association) after an encouraging 2015 campaign that included a CAA Rookie of the Year performance by now-sophomore midfielder Stephanie Asher. Elon also has a wealth of experience, something that wasn’t the case for the past two years as it built the program.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
