Elon students call for chess club after popularity increases

Chess is played with two players, each moving their appropriate pieces during their turn. The objective of the game is to put the opponent’s king in “checkmate” — a move where the king can no longer escape without losing the match. Currently, many players are opting to play online, on a computer or on a mobile device.

Vice President of Strategic Initiatives to leave Elon University after two decades

Jeff Stein, vice president of strategic initiatives, is leaving Elon University to become president of Mary Baldwin University in Virginia. In the last two years, former Dean of the School of Communications Rochelle Ford, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Aswani Volety and Dean of the School of Health Sciences Rebecca Neiduski left Elon to become presidents of other universities. He will succeed Pamela Fox, current Mary Baldwin president, as the first man to hold the position in almost five decades. He will officially begin his new position on July 1.

Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated actress Ashley Judd is at Elon University today and will deliver the Spring Convocation address at 7 p.m. in Alumni Gym as part of the 2022-23 speaker series. Judd, an activist and humanitarian, is a champion for women’s rights and public health issues. She was one of the most vocal figures of the #MeToo movement and named TIME’s 2017 “Person of the Year.”

Elon University student brings his hometown hobby to campus

Everyone has their own way to unwind. Freshman Jorden Carter does just that, by going outdoors to practice lassoing. Lassoing, or as Carter calls it, “roping,” started off as something he had to do for work on his family’s farm. Now, he gets to do it for fun.

Shannon Bream of FOX News gives lecture at Elon University School of Law

Bream was welcomed and introduced by Elon Law Leadership Fellow Courtney Latourrette and Interim Dean and professor of law Alan D. Woodlief, Jr. The conversation held on stage with Bream was moderated by Professor Catherine Dunham.

Elon University football team works with Be The Match

This is the fifth annual drive Elon’s football team has helped with. Elon community members were also able to sign up via a QR-code to become a donor. Once signed up, participants swabbed their cheeks and submitted the samples. If a participant is selected as a match, they will receive further instructions on what to do next.

She is the third and final speaker for Elon Law’s Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series.

OPINION: The war for insulin affordability isn't over yet

I was distributing newspapers on the morning of March 1, 2023, when my earbuds suddenly paused my Taylor Swift playlist to bombard me with a breaking news alert: Eli Lilly, one of the biggest insulin producers in the world, had decided to cap their out-of-pocket prices at $35 a month. I was standing in the middle of Global Commons, holding dozens of papers, when I broke down in tears at the sight of my phone. At that moment, an NBC news alert changed the trajectory of my life and informed me I could now afford to pursue my dreams.

Elon University men’s tennis routs UNC Greensboro on Senior Day

The stands were packed to the brim at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Tuesday night as three seniors — Nicholas Condos, Nicholas Campbell and Luke Queiroz — were honored. The Elon University men’s tennis team displayed a dominant performance en route to a 6-1 Senior Day victory over the University of North Carolina Greensboro Spartans.

The Elon University baseball team traveled to High Point Tuesday for a nationally televised, one game interconference meeting. Those watching ESPN+ saw Elon’s comeback heroics in the eighth and ninth innings, which propelled the Phoenix to a 7-3 victory.

After being no-hit by Duke University yesterday, the Elon University softball team took to the field at Hunt Softball Park with a newfound fire underneath them. The Phoenix wasted no time getting the lead and shut out the North Carolina Central Eagles 8-0 in five innings.

Elon University hires new director of disabilities resources after seven months

The Office of Disabilities Resources welcomes a new face this week: Monica Isbell, formerly the disability services coordinator for Alamance Community College, will now serve at Elon University as the director of disabilities resources. The change comes after longtime director Susan Wise stepped down in September 2022.

Elon University dance team places second in NDA championship

The Elon University dance team earned second place in the hip hop Division I category at the National Dance Alliance national championship. Earlier this week the team got third place in the pom Division I category. Elon placed second overall in the hip hop Division I category with a final performance score of 94.6286 falling six tenths of a point behind Utah Valley State University.
