At Thursday night’s SGA Senate meeting, Paul Anderson, director of writing across the university, updated students about the Writing Initiative, part of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan. “We will be emphasizing a couple different kinds of writing students will be using in their careers or their professions and figuring out ways to help you develop those abilities,” he said.

Students take a spin with the tango

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – One of the first things students studying abroad in Argentina encounter is the prominence of the sensual and sultry dance: the Argentine tango. The tango, which is as much of a mixture of cultures as Buenos Aires itself, made its first appearance in the capital city right around the same time as immigrants from all over Europe as well as the gauchos, or cowboys, from the provinces. Each group brought with it its own developed form of dance.

Spectrum suspends resolution to remove Chick-fil-A from campus

Spectrum announced tonight its decision to suspend its resolution to remove Chick-fil-A from campus. Chick-fil-A declared yesterday its intention to cease its donations to anti-gay organizations, and Emily Kane, an education and advocacy chair for Spectrum, said the organization is currently investigating the claim. Spectrum is not suspending the legislation because of the criticism it received after drafting the resolution, said Laura Lee Sturm, vice president of Spectrum.

I recently came across a well-written article in the sports section authored by Zachary Horner. In this particular article, Mr. Horner interviewed two of my teammates in regards to their efforts to spread their religion with those on the Cross Country team.The article gave an in-depth view of the religious views that these two particular athletes have, both of whom I have the utmost respect for. In the wake of the article, I am uncomfortable with the new view that has been shed on the team.

Burlington Carousel Festival celebrates quarter of a century

DOJ claims Alamance County Sheriff's office acts prejudice toward Latinos

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Alamance County Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Terry Johnson Thursday seeking to speak with employees of the local government office without the presence of County Attorney Clyde Albright. The DOJ released the results of a two-year investigation Tuesday, which indicated Alamance County Sheriff's Office has participated in discriminatory acts against Latinos. The Department determined the Sheriff's office "engaged in a pattern or practice of violations of the United States Constitution and federal law," according to an article published in The Burlington Times-News. In June 2010, the DOJ informed the Sheriff's office and Terry Johnson, Alamance County sheriff of an investigation into allegations of discriminatory acts concerning policing and unconstitutional searches and seizures, the Times-News reported. ASCO and Johnson question the validity of the Department's findings, attributing the final decision to the political agenda of the Obama administration.

Seeing Himself Through His Music

Freshman Shane Dittmar has a passion for singing and playing piano, and he has also been blind since birth. The 18-year-old singer and piano-player was born with "Leber's Congenital Amaurosis," a disease that left both him and his twin brother blind since they were born. "We were born blind, mostly blind, not completely blind," Dittmar said. Growing up his eyesight never changed, and neither did his love for music.
