Football falls to Citadel after crawling back from big deficit

The Elon University football team lost 38-24 to The Citadel Saturday afternoon. The loss puts the Phoenix at 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Southern Conference, guaranteeing Elon with a losing season both overall and in-conference. The Citadel running back Darien Robinson led the Bulldogs on a big rushing day as they put up 366 total rushing yards.

Simply brothers: Hamiltons cherish special exhibition opportunity

The first and only (so far) time Ferrum College Panthers Phoenix senior guard Marshall Hamilton and Elon University sophomore guard Austin Hamilton faced off against each other in a team environment was at a basketball camp when the former was ten years old and the latter was eight. Marshall’s team won, and Austin cried. “His team beat my team in the championship,” Austin said.

Men's soccer preps for SoCon Tournament, face Davidson Saturday

After completing one of the most successful regular seasons in program history, the Elon University men’s soccer team looks to continue to re-write the school’s history books with a deep run in the upcoming Southern Conference tournament. The Phoenix won a team-record 12 games under head coach Darren Powell, including four over nationally-ranked opponents.

Eagles end Elon’s season in double overtime of SoCon tournament

“It just wasn’t meant to be,” Elon University women’s soccer head coach Chris Neal said following Friday’s double overtime loss to Georgia Southern University in the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament. Freshman forward Emily Hirano gave the eighth-seeded Eagles the victory in the 102nd minute on a header from six yards out. “They created a two versus one with (junior midfielder) Kimmie Krauss on the left side,” Neal said.

Dugas suspended for nine games

Elon University men's basketball senior forward Roger Dugas has been suspended for the "first semester," according to head coach Matt Matheny. "Roger will not play the entire first semester," Matheny said Friday.

Swepson: Rhodes Stadium felt "like a coffin" last Saturday

Elon University head football coach Jason Swepson said Rhodes Stadium, the home of the Phoenix, “felt like a coffin” during last Saturday’s 31-17 loss to Furman University, a loss that knocked Elon out of any shot of playoff contention. “We just didn’t create our own energy,” Swepson said after the lackluster performance against the Paladins.

Freshmen on men’s team adjust to bigger opponents, rigorous play

Elon University men’s basketball freshman center Tony Sabato and freshman guard Tanner Samson, the team’s first-years with scholarships, are still adjusting to life away from the comforts of home while also being thrust into the demanding world of Division I athletics. It’s an adjustment Sabato admitted has been difficult, in different capacities. “Making sure you eat right (and getting) to bed on time (have been difficult),” Sabato said.

Monty Sanders: The man behind the team

There are many things involved in basketball beyond just playing the game. There’s workouts and conditioning drills to be set up, travel arrangements to be made, keeping an accurate recruiting and alumni database, overseeing student managers, maintaining equipment and much more. One man, Monty Sanders, is the glue behind the Elon University men’s basketball team, doing all of this and more. Sanders played basketball for Elon from 2007-2009 and was a captain in his senior season.
