Morris Claiborne situation sheds light on sports journalistic integrity

By now everyone who has any sort of interest in sport has heard about Morris Claiborne. The former Louisiana State defensive back, entered into June’s NFL draft, scored a 4 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test,  an examination administered to all draftees. The problem is that Caliborne’s score, which is the lowest score any future draft pick has ever received, was supposed to remain confidential.

Elon students get paid to play

Financing college just got a whole lot more fun. Grantoo, a social gaming community that gives college students the chance to win tuition money and donate to charity, recently opened its website to Elon University students. Within the first week and a half of play, sophomores Taylor Pewitt and Katie Ryan each recieved the first place prize: a $1,000 scholarship. Pewitt placed first out of 73 students in the April 8 tournament, and Ryan placed first April 15.

University programs recognize public health issues

The problems are real, and the debates are enduring. From epidemic management to health care policy, public health practices affect lawmakers and citizens alike in nearly every country worldwide. Although discussions of public health issues are ongoing, Elon University recognized National Public Health Week April 2-6.

Vote against project captures demonstration against Amendment One

Little commonality existed among the subjects of the photographs. Only a white shirt united them all, but with the click of a button and bright flash, Elon University students added their face to the Vote Against Project. The creator of the Vote Against Project visited Elon April 5, the last stop for the Vote Against Project college tour. The organization exhibits a collection of photographs featuring people wearing a shirt that says "Vote Against," encouraging North Carolina voters to vote in opposition to Amendment One, which bans legal recognition of all unmarried couples, May 8. "I knew these images showing all types of love was going to automatically bring the people in and help them understand what this amendment is about," said Curtis Brown, the creator and photographer for the Vote Against Project. Brown uses his experience in photography to communicate the controversy surrounding Amendment One and demonstrate the extent of its potential influence.

Human trafficking week to bring knowledge, perspective to issue

With the tenth class of Periclean Scholars soon to be inducted, Crista Arangala, Periclean class adviser, and Tom Arcaro, program director, decided to make a bigger celebration of the class’s induction that could also benefit the entire Elon community. A full week has been created to discuss the issue of human trafficking.

Irwin signs professional soccer contract with Charlotte Eagles Former Elon University goalkeeper Clint Irwin signed with the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer Leagues. This is the third professional organization for Irwin, who spent a preseason with Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution and 2011 with Capital City FC in Ottawa, Canada.

Community gathers at vigil commemorating lynching victim Wyatt Outlaw

Members of the community and Alamance County Remembrance Coalition gathered outside of the Alamance County Courthouse on Feb. 22 to hold a vigil honoring the life of Wyatt Outlaw. Outlaw was lynched by a mob of White Brotherhood members outside the courthouse on Feb. 26, 1870.

Elon's SUB Game night, light turnout, big impact

Elon’s Student Union Board hosted one of its many events this semester offering a variety of games, snacks, drinks and music Feb. 21. Though the turnout was light with around two attendees, the organization aims to build an inclusive, light-hearted space on weekend nights, channeling a place to meet new people, says Tatiana Lorich.
