by Glenda Crawford For the past three years, members of Phi Beta Kappa at Elon University have observed with deep concern the fact that national Phi Beta Kappa foreign language requirements disqualify many top students otherwise eligible for membership.  The national requirements state: Stipulation 3: Candidates shall have demonstrated, by successful work in high school or college, or in the two together, a knowledge of a second or non-native language at least minimally appropriate for a liberal education.

Elon reworks offense in spring practices

Wide receiver Aaron Mellette is now just a legend. A memory of the player who finished his Elon career with 4,254 receiving yards and 44 touchdowns and went on to get drafted by the Baltimore Ravens last weekend. Quarterback Thomas Wilson is also a thing of the past, leaving Elon with a gaping hole under center that is up for grabs. This period of change has allowed third-year head coach Jason Swepson and offensive coordinator Chris Pincince to retool the Elon offense, which averaged 24.7 points per game in 2012. In a preseason scrimmage last Saturday in Rhodes Stadium, Elon showcased a speed-based offense in which the team ran 80 plays in around an hour.

Playing one varsity sport is hard enough, but for one Elon athlete, senior Ali Ford, playing two sports is just as much fun as playing one. Ford was originally recruited to play basketball for the Phoenix, but had always had a passion for softball.

Softball sweeps doubleheader from North Carolina A&T

In the midst of what has become a season-long struggle, the Elon University softball team got exactly what it needed Wednesday May 1 in it’s final non-conference opponent, the North Carolina A&T State University Aggies. The Phoenix swept the doubleheader in style with a 1-0 win in game one and a 4-2 victory in game two. In the two games, the Phoenix only used two pitchers.

Student film “Street Picasso” advances to finals of Sprite Refreshing Films contest

The Sprite Refreshing Films contest accepted 200 applications from universities across the nation for funding for short films, and Elon University senior Dean Coots’ film is one of the four lucky finalists. After months of planning, casting, writing, research and, most of all, anticipation, Coots and his crew shot his original short film April 26.

Elon University debates nationwide gun control, violence

Members of the Elon and Burlington communities gathered May 1 to discuss issues, tensions and laws surrounding gun violence in the United States. The evening began with opening statements and concerns from community panelists, which consisted of Elon professors and students alike. “Taking a gun away from a person won’t make them any less violent,” said freshman Samantha Allen.

Longing for home: Elon Community Garden holds sentimental value for Elon custodian

Students in Elon University’s Garden Studio class spend their time working in the Elon Community Garden to maintain its upkeep and harvest crops for course credit. But for Delio Estrada-Palacios, the quaint garden behind Powell House is a place to reminisce. Estrada-Palacios, a custodian for Elon Campus Dining, came to the United States from Guatemala 23 years ago.

Chick-fil-A decision: Discrimination still tastes bitter

“There is no actionable cause to remove Chick-fil-A from campus.”  As an openly lesbian student who has spent the last year dealing with the issue of removing Chick-fil-A, this statement is a kick in the face.  To me, this says we have reviewed all of the facts, analyzed the policies and found no valid reason to remove this fast food establishment.  This says your feelings, identity and comfort on this campus are not enough of an “actionable cause.”  Because of the visible stand Chick-fil-A has made about its opinions of the LGBTQ community through financial donations and other statements, they have become a global symbol of anti-LGBTQ sentiment and discrimination.

Dear Elon and the Board of Trustees,

In light of the recent Chick-fil-A decision, I feel compelled to share a different perspective.  It seems that much of the discussion has revolved around the idea of freedom of expression, especially the expression of the “Christian” idea of family.  While I appreciate the desire to protect my right to free speech, I fear the Elon community is ill-informed of what it means to be a Christian. [quote]Christianity is not judgment.  Christianity does not shame or humiliate.  Christianity does not stand for the repression of others and it does not stand by silently when others are hurting.[/quote] I believe very strongly that my faith requires a life of action and love.
