Is football heading to the same fate as boxing?

Recently, I was discussing sports with a good friend of mine when he mentioned that his father believed that football is headed towards a similar fate to that of which boxing has become. His quote made me think about how the current state of football has changed since its inception into United States pop culture almost forty years ago, a time in which heavyweight boxing had reached the pinnacle of its popularity amongst viewers in America, as well as much of the world.

With sweat dripping off her face and a towel over her shoulder, Kayla Agae summed up the volleyball game she just played in two oh-so-accurate words. “Exhilarating, exhausting,” the sophomore outside hitter said. Salazar's hot start provides offensive spark for Elon

Junior forward Miguel Salazar spent the majority of his first two years on the Elon University men’s soccer team as little more than a secondary offensive option behind the team’s headline-grabbing stars. But that didn’t bother Salazar. He knew his value was as a steady presence in the defensive midfield, where he would roam the field and disrupt the opponent’s possession to help Elon’s back four quell attacks on their final third.  “My priority has always been defense first and attacking second,” Salazar said.
