The Elon University football team surged with 21 second-half points but was unable to break through in a 34-24 road loss to the University of Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Delaware Stadium in Newark, Del.

The Phoenix trailed 27-3 at halftime and scored on three touchdown passes by senior quarterback Mike Quinn in the second half but couldn’t get closer than 10.

Elon outgained Delaware 367-359, won the time of possession battle (30:18-to-29:42) and had more first downs (27) than Delaware (20) did.

Quinn completed 29-of-55 passes for 291 yards, surpassing 4,000 career yards.

The Phoenix scored on its opening possession of the second half when Quinn found sophomore wide receiver Justin Osborne for a 5-yard score. Late in the frame, Elon went 90 yards in 13 plays on a drive that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Quinn to freshman Tre Lennon.

Delaware’s Trent Hurley scored on a 6-yard run early in the second quarter to up the lead back to 17. Quinn found Lennon again, this time from 35 yards, for a touchdown with 8:58 to play.

Those were Lennon’s first-career touchdowns. He accumulated 95 yards on seven catches.

Delaware struck first at the 7:29 mark of the first quarter when Hurley hit Nick Boyle with a 1-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was wide right.

Sophomore kicker John Gallagher converted on a 37-yard field goal early in the second quarter. But the Blue Hens scored 21 points in a span of 2:39 to break the game open.

Wes Hills started the barrage with a 1-yard rush that was followed by another 1-yard touchdown, this one by Jalen Randolph. The stretch culminated when Malcolm Brown intercepted a pass from Quinn and took it 20 yards to the house with 2:11 in the first half.

Elon junior running back Tracey Coppedge carried the ball 24 times for 91 yards.

The Phoenix falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in CAA play. Elon hosts Stony Brook University at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Rhodes Stadium.
