For students who had to struggle to get here or have struggled while here — including first-generation students — the graduation ceremony is more than just an orchestrated event, guaranteed to be given to you at the end of your four years. It’s something you and those who love you have fought incredibly hard for.  It’s the culmination of more than four years of coursework.  It’s a product of collective and unapologetic tenacity from you and those who have fought with you.  So on the day of your undergraduate graduation, your invitation for family and friends is more than just an expectation.

Elon, ABSS in informal talks about Elon Elementary School land

Elon University President Leo Lambert and ABSS Superintendent Bill Harrison have informally discussed a deal where the university would acquire Elon Elementary School, Harrison admitted after being accused of secrecy at an Oct. 10 Alamance-Burlington Board of Education meeting, according to the Burlington Times-News. As part of the deal, Elon would give ABSS land to build a new elementary school.

Film series to help educate community on difficult issues

Through their partnership with Crossroads, an Elon class is helping to educate the Burlington community on important issues through film. Crossroads is a sexual assault response and resource center and child advocacy center that was established 40 years ago.  With offices only minutes away from campus, Crossroads provides a 24/7 crisis hotline as well as trained advocates for victims of sexual assault. “That’s where we provide really valuable services,” said Julie Budd, volunteer and outreach coordinator for the center.

Elon 990 forms show financial comparisons with other universities

Every year, Elon University and other tax-excluded organizations must release a tax form to the IRS by May in order to remain tax-exempt. These forms, called 990s, have to be published every year and must be made available to the public for three years. Elon News Network found Elon’s 2014 990 form and compared the school’s finances and salaries to Duke University and High Point University. Their forms are from 2013.

Commencement 2017 will be held in Scott Plaza

According to a letter from Jeffrey Clark, executive director of Cultural and Special Programs, commencement for December 2016 and Spring 2017 Elon University graduates will be held again in Scott Plaza —retreating from the original plan to adhere to university tradition and host commencement Under the Oaks.  Commencement in May 2016 was held in Scott Plaza due to McEwen construction plans.  "Returning Commencement to Under the Oaks this year would certainly require us to institute a ticket policy to limit the number of family/guests who can attend the outdoor ceremony," Clark added.

Gathering of friends celebrates life of Elon faculty member

Students, colleagues, family and friends gathered in the Numen Lumen gathering space on March 30 to celebrate the life of Allison Keill, director of the Elon Curriculum Resources Center. She passed away March 25 at 50 years old following an 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer. The gathering of friends began with words from University Chaplain and Dean of Multifaith Engagement Kirstin Boswell before the floor opened up for attendees to share feelings and memories.
