University Bursar to leave Elon after decades of service

Jay Harper first stepped on Elon University's campus as an undergraduate student in 1990. Little did he know, being a Phoenix would become a decades-long endeavor. Harper returned in 2002 and spent more than 20 years working as the university bursar. Harper will leave his role of working with tuition, students and parents to head to Duke University Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics, where he will work in a primarily remote finance position with the Children’s Clinical Research Unit. Harper said while he will be performing similar tasks in his new position,  he’s excited to become a piece of an entirely new puzzle.

Town Council considers extending Link Transit access to Elon

At its Jan. 23 regular meeting, the Elon Town Council voted to continue looking into the option to extend the blue line of Burlington’s fare-free Link Transit bus system, adding six stops in the town of Elon. The Link Transport proposal would mark the first time in 62 years that Elon has been linked with train service using public transport since the Elon College station, served by the Southern Railway, closed in 1961.The Elon College depot once stood on the corner of Lebanon and Williamson Avenues.

Chef Kabui brings indigenous wisdom to Elon University

After his “chef takeover” with Elon Dining, Kabui headed to El Centro for a food justice dinner and discussion in partnership with the Center for Race, Ethnicity & Diversity Education and Elon Sustainability. The event, “A Black Food Odyssey in the American South,” was an in-depth cooking lesson infused with Kabui’s deep knowledge on sustainability, community and humanity. He discussed the deep roots between his community and food and how the principles of health and community wellbeing are deeply intertwined.

Elon University Interfraternity Council hosts spring recruitment

The Elon University Interfraternity Council’s annual spring recruitment is taking place this week, through Feb. 12, 2023. Throughout the week, the potential new members attend events to get to know the university’s eight recognized IFC fraternities that participate in formal recruitment: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Pi and Zeta Beta Tau.

Elon University selects School of Health Sciences dean

Maha Lund will serve as Elon University’s next dean of the School of Health Sciences. After a national search, she was one of three finalists for the position. Lund, doctorate of health sciences from NOVA Southeastern University, will join Elon after serving as the division chief and director of the Physician Assistant Program at Emory University School of Medicine.

OPINION: Affirmative action is much-needed policy

The college application and admissions procedures are stressful for almost every high school upperclassman; introducing anxieties over the many different necessities that go into the decision-making process. This struggle is often amplified for students of color; whilst most students struggle with primarily school-related issues such as grades and making the most of their college essays, many students of color must account for the possible discrimination they may encounter in the process based on their names or even their socioeconomic status.

Elon University Surtal creates community on campus

When Elon University junior Shriya Baru joined Surtal, she hoped to meet new people and explore her Indian culture. Surtal helped Shriya establish connections with others who share similar beliefs. Surtal is Elon’s first Bollywood-fusion dance club and began in the fall of 2021. The club gives members the opportunity to learn about various Indian dance festivals. Members have performed at the Festival of Lights and Luminaries, the Festival of Colors and World Dance Day.

Elon University looks to dismiss lawsuit from former professor

Elon University is seeking dismissal of former Elon professor of accounting Ray Knight’s federal lawsuit, which he filed against the university on Feb. 6. Knight alleges the university retaliated against him for whistleblowing, wrongfully denied him tenure, wrongfully terminated his employment and violated both federal whistleblower protections and North Carolina public policy. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Elon University dances for a cause

Elon University’s Alumni Gym was transformed into a sea of energy April 11 as the community gathered for the 2026 Elonthon. The six-hour dance marathon, one of Elon’s many philanthropic events, brought students together to raise over $47,000 for Duke Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for children's hospitals in the U.S. and Canada.
