Annual celebration reveals discordance between faculty, student expectations

The spring tradition, CELEBRATE! week, is comprised of events honoring Elon University students’ achievements in academics, but many students recognize the week by one day less of class. “I do definitely think it is underappreciated,” said senior Brenna Lakeson. During her freshman year, Lakeson spent the day of Student Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF) at the zoo, but said her experience as an orientation leader helped her better grasp the value of the event. Watson-Odyssey scholarship offers opportunities for first generation college students

"We're like a lot of the students in terms of academic pursuits, but not the same in terms of financial status," said senior Kristin Greene, Watson Scholar and interim assistant director for the Multicultural Center. Students in the Watson-Odyssey Scholarship program, designed for generation college students from low-income families, often lack the same resources to which the majority of Elon students have access. While resources include tangible items, such as textbooks and class materials, even guidance about college life requires a different source.

Schedule proving tough for Elon baseball

On paper, the Elon University baseball team’s trip to Wofford College in  Spartanburg, S.C., was everything the Phoenix could have wanted. It was a three-game opportunity for Elon to correct its ills against the team at the bottom of the Southern Conference standings. But games aren’t played on paper.

Accounting professor awarded outstanding educator of the year

Art Cassill, accounting professor at Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, received the award for Outstanding Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Through a nomination process, the committee of member’s in the NCACPA chooses a person who has made an impact in advising and teaching, among other contributions to the field of accounting. “It is a bit overwhelming in a good way,” Cassill said in regards to receiving the award On his way to Convocation, he received a call telling him he had won the award.

Pride Week expresses unity within diverse organization

Pride Week signifies the unity and confidence within the LGBTQ community, but for sophomore Kevin Moore, the celebratory week at Elon University is a symbol of comfort. Moore, president of Spectrum, said he was in the closet until the events throughout Pride Week revealed a group dedicated to acceptance and support. Pride Week signifies unity, said Raafe Purnsley, a member of Spectrum.

The department will present Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” written in 1813, as this year’s spring play April 19-22.

Former Olympic gold medalist discusses injuries with Elon athletes

“Athletes, love it!” is how former Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street introduced herself to the assembly gathered in the Walker Room of Alumni Fieldhouse at Elon University. She seemed right at home. Street came to Elon’s campus to talk to Elon athletes about injuries and other things that relate to athletes.
