Johnston named SoCon Player of the Week

For the second straight week, an Elon University women’s tennis player has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week.  This week’s honor went to senior Jordan Johnston, who went 3-1 during matches played March 17-23. Johnston went 2-0 in singles play during the week, starting with a three-set victory over Ansley Speaks of Furman University in Elon’s 4-3 loss to the Paladins March 21.  Speaks took the first set by a narrow 7-6 margin, but Johnston stormed back to take the second and third sets, as well as the match, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2. Johnston once again showed this resiliency March 22 against Wofford College.

Elon shuts out Georgia Southern for eighth straight win

The Elon University men’s tennis team completed its second straight shutout with a 7-0 win over the Georgia Southern University Eagles. University Historian compiles, celebrates Elon's past in new book

As Elon continues to celebrate its 125th anniversary, one member of the Elon community is celebrating this year for another reason. George Troxler, a professor emeritus of history, has worked at Elon University for more than 40 years and currently serves as the university historian. After three years of research and writing, Troxler recently published a book entitled "From a Grove of Oaks: The Story of Elon University." The book recounts Elon's history from its founding to the present day. Troxler hopes his book will be more than just a coffee table read. "I'm hoping that the people who are going to read it, primarily Elon alumni and people that are associated with the school," Troxler said.

Elon drops rubber match to Western Carolina

After a three hour, 17 minute rain delay, the Elon University baseball team could not muster enough in the rubber match of a three game series with Southern Conference foe Western Carolina University, falling 9-7 to the Catamounts March 23 at Latham Park. With one out in the top of the third and Western Carolina leading 2-0, a rain delay was put into action that threw off both teams.

Elon softball swept by Georgia Southern

The Elon University softball team concluded its weekend series with Georgia Southern University on the wrong end of a decidedly one-sided 9-1 loss to the Eagles March 23 in Statesboro, Ga. The Phoenix struck first in the top of the first on a solo home run down the left field line from senior center fielder Carleigh Nester, the only run of the day for the visitors. The Eagles immediately answered Elon’s run with one of their own in the bottom of the first. Emily Snider laid down a sacrifice bunt that Elon junior starter Caitlin O’Shea fielded and threw to first to get the sure out, allowing Taylor Rogers to score. In the bottom of the third, the Eagles seized control of the game.

Elon splits first two games with Western Carolina

In what may become the final series between the Southern Conference heavyweights, Elon University and Western Carolina University split the first two games of a three-game series this weekend at Latham Park. Elon took the first game 5-1 Friday after 7.2 stellar innings from junior Lucas Bakker, while Western Carolina won the second game 6-5 after a pair of late home runs. Elon 5, Western Carolina 1 Elon went behind 1-0 in the fourth after shortstop Aaron Attaway reached on an error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Dykota Speiss.

Phoenix drops first two to Eagles

The Elon University softball team opened up its weekend series with Georgia Southern University by dropping both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, 7-3, and 5-4 in eight innings. In the first game, the Eagles jumped on the Phoenix’s sophomore starter Kayla Caruso right away with three runs in the first and two more in the second. With one out in the bottom of the first, senior shortstop Kourtny Thomas pounded a three run home run to spot her team a 3-0 lead. In the next inning, junior center fielder Breanna McLendon, who had reached on an infield single, stole second.
