Elon releases 2015 baseball schedule

The Elon University baseball team will face five teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament in addition to its inaugural Colonial Athletic Association slate in 2015. The Phoenix released its 2015 schedule on Friday, which begins with a three-game home series against Penn State University on Feb.

Elon parents donate largest single gift in university's history

This post will be updated as more information becomes available. The Elon University Board of Trustees announced Thursday morning that the university has received its largest single donation in history from the parents of two Elon students. Dwight and Martha Schar, P’16 and P’19, have pledged $12 million for the expansion of the School of Communications and a new multipurpose building that will serve as a central point on campus for national and international speakers, convocation, speeches, rallies and Phoenix Athletics’ events. After the donation, the fundraising campaign for the School of Communications has jumped to $12.1 million, less than $3 million from the goal of $15 million. The latest specifics of the convocation center come from The Elon Commitment Plan of 2009, which outlines the need for a 5,000-seat multipurpose center.

Elon starts 4-0 for the first time in 17 years

While dorms may have emptied Tuesday as students traveled home for Thanksgiving break, Alumni Gym filled with excitement as the Elon University women’s basketball team fended off the Liberty University Flames by a 73-62 score and captured its first 4-0 start in 17 years. Senior guard Zora Stephenson made a layup five seconds into the game.

Battling Depression on a college campus

An American College Health Association, National College Health Assessment in 2011 study found that 30 percent of college students surveyed said they were "so depressed that it was difficult to function at some time in the past year." If that number applies to Elon, that could be roughly 1,500 students. Some students might catch themselves saying "I'm depressed" and not really understanding the seriousness of that statement.

Walk-on athletes find motivation to play through passions

Many walk-on athletes, who are on the roster but do not receive athletic scholarships, say they find their motivation by simply loving the game. "I get a high sense of fulfillment from playing," said Sam Hershberger, a junior on the men's basketball team. Hershberger was in contact with Elon coaches before enrolling in the university, but he said they were upfront in explaining he would be a walk-on athlete.

Elon hires new women’s golf head coach

Elon University has hired Susan Rosenstiel as the next head coach of its women's golf program, Director of Athletics Jennifer Strawley announced June 4. Rosenstiel arrives after 23 seasons with the University of Alabama, where she most recently served as an assistant coach.
