Local nonprofit raises money to pay ABSS school lunch debt

The total cost of lunch debt across public schools nationwide is $194 millions, according to a 2025 report from the Education Data Initiative. North Carolina accumulates $243,639,200 a year. However, the lunch debt from the Alamance-Burlington School System will not be a part of that number anymore — because as of right now, it has none.

Local youth program helps teens explore filmmaking, acting

Teen 2 Teen Video & Theatre, an Alamance County production group, is giving teenagers a chance to showcase their creativity, with help from a Queens University of Charlotte alum. Katie Farrell, who graduated from Queens in 2019, said she was searching for a job when she found an opening at Thataways Youth Center that closely matched her major, a Bachelor of Arts in multimedia storytelling. She first worked for Teen 2 Teen’s summer film lab.

The standard for Elon University men’s golf hasn’t changed. After a senior-led squad captured the team’s first Coastal Athletic Association title and advanced to NCAA play last season, the Phoenix enter spring of 2026 younger but no less ambitious. Head coach Don Hill said he believes the foundation is already in place.

PolitiFact founder visits Elon, discusses importance of truth in polarized political climate

Fact-checker Bill Adair once lied on C-Span to a “Brian” from Michigan about whether Republicans lied more than Democrats. To appear unbiased, Adair said fact-checkers did not “keep score.” Thirteen years later, Adair found Brian’s daughter and apologized. Adair, the founder of PolitiFact, visited Elon University’s Whitley Auditorium March 16 for the Liberal Arts Forum, a student-run organization that arranges for a variety of academic speakers to address the Elon community.

Alamance County enters tornado watch, some March 16 classes canceled

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Alamance County that will be in effect until 2 p.m. March 16. his watch comes as part of a big storm movement coming into Alamance County on March 16. In another email sent to students by Dooley at 10:36 a.m., he announced that in-person meetings on Elon’s campus for classes March 16 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. are canceled.

Elon University hosts second Women of Elon conference

Elon University hosted its second Women of Elon conference on March 13 and 14. The first day of the conference included a guided networking session to build new connections and grow your network, followed by a welcome reception and a discussion led by President Connie Book and Elon faculty member Alexis Franzese. The second day included breakout sessions in the morning that focused on skill building and personal development, such as Breaking Your Own Glass Ceiling and Resilient Together: The Power of Female Friendships in Leadership and Life. On the second day of the conference,Book hosted a fireside chat with nutritionist Joy Bauer, who talked about the importance of sleep and protein for wellness.

Applications open for Roberts Academy at Elon University

Roberts Academy at Elon University, the school for students with dyslexia, has opened its application process. Roberts Academy will open on Elon’s campus next fall, initially serving students in grades three and four. Roberts Academy will temporarily be located in the Trollinger House, which currently houses the I-House Living-Learning Community.

When Reagan Kuehn first picked up a lacrosse stick around age 9, something clicked. She had tried it all — soccer, basketball, track, gymnastics, ballet — but lacrosse was different. Years later, the Maryland native is one of Elon University’s most important defenders, playing a position her head coach, Josh Hexter, has compared to the most high-pressure role in football.

Food Lion plans renovations for 3 Burlington stores

Food Lion and the city of Burlington are continuing to build their relationship with three Food Lion locations scheduled to undergo renovations this year. The company has strong North Carolina ties. It was founded in Salisbury, North Carolina, only about an hour drive from Burlington, and has over 500 locations across the state.

Alamance Battleground celebrates 250 years of independence

Wearing his long red coat with black and white detailing, David Snyder loaded his weapon, aimed at his target and waited to hear the signal. Behind him, a crowd of people watched as he lined up his shot. Standing next to other redcoats, he fired his musket, the shot echoing through the wooded area. He’s used to this. He’s been an American Revolutionary War reenactor for over 50 years.

Elon SGA hosts executive candidate forum

Students filled Irazú Coffee on March 11 to hear from three candidates who are running for an executive position on Elon’s Student Government Association about what they hope to bring to the student body if elected. The topics discussed included sustainability and the lack of SGA knowledge on campus.
