Jewish Studies celebrates a decade at Elon University

Elon University’s Jewish Studies program is marking 10 years on campus. The program was established in the fall of 2012 in order to teach modern Hebrew, raise awareness, and create an environment for Jewish and non-Jewish people alike.

Women in politics: representation, contention

Sophomore Reese Guckert said that she first became interested in politics after feeling judged for expressing her views during the 2016 presidential election. Today, Guckert said she is both inspired and frustrated by both party’s responses regarding women in politics. Guckert, the public relations chair for the university’s College Republicans club, said that a candidate’s appearance is not something that the candidate themselves nor voters should be focusing on. Guckert said this is something she likes about Republican 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley.

'Rising from the Ashes' panel reminisces on history, structure of Elon University

McKinnon Hall was filled with laughter, celebration and curiosity last night as three panelists reminisced on their time at Elon and the growth that has occurred. Elon University hosted “Rising from the Ashes: A Century of Innovation,” a panel that acted as one part of a year-long commemoration of the rebuilding of Elon after the 1923 fire.

Social district to open in downtown Elon

The town of Elon is establishing a social district — an area that allows patrons of downtown businesses to purchase and drink alcohol outdoors — outside of local restaurants such as Pandora’s Pies, MaGerk’s and TANGENT Eat+Bar.

Elon University-based artist’s ‘FULLSTOP’ expresses transition, emotions

Elon sophomore Jacob Laxton released an original album with his own vocals and songwriting, “FULLSTOP” Feb. 24. Laxton, a producer for Elon’s student-run record label Limelight Records, has been producing music for five years. He found his love for production in making music for others at his high school.

Elon University’s Active Citizen Series hosts spring deliberative dialogue on mass shootings

Since the dialogue was first planned four months ago, community and school shootings have only increased into the new year — 94 mass shootings have been reported in 2023 as of Feb. 28, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The discussions were partly led by a guide from the National Issues Forums Institute on How Should We Prevent Mass Shootings in Our Communities, with students, faculty, staff and community members sharing additional ideas for prevention and exchanging views.

The Gilded Bean Coffee Bar extends Sunday hours for customers

The Gilded Bean Coffee Bar in Downtown Burlington will be open longer on Sundays for customers. The shop used to close at 3 p.m. but now it will stay open until 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Elon Town Council discusses lack of parking downtown, proposes metered parking

A main problem Elon residents have with downtown Elon is a lack of parking. Benchmark planning, a consulting firm hired by the town of Elon to create a master plan for downtown Elon, proposed metered parking in some locations downtown. During the Feb. 27 council meeting, Benchmark planning shared findings of a survey and focus groups they hosted for input on downtown Elon.

Elon University men’s basketball loses emotional Senior Night game

The Elon University men’s basketball team started off hot making 9-16 shots in the opening minutes on Saturday but fell off as the game went on, allowing the University of Delaware to dominate and win 70-54. Elon, who came into Saturday’s game with its first round Colonial Athletic Association Tournament matchup already locked in against William & Mary, did not have much to play for with regard to standings.

Elon University raises $48K during Relay for Life

Elon University students honored survivors, fighters, caregivers and those who have lost their lives to cancer with the annual event, Relay for Life Friday. For twelve consecutive hours, members of the campus community including fraternities, sororities and service based organizations participated in the event that raised $48,985.14.

Elon University track and field wins inaugural CAA indoor championship

The Elon University track and field team scored in all 18 events to win the first-ever Colonial Athletic Association indoor team championship on Thursday. The Phoenix tallied 129.83 points to edge runner-up Hampton, who scored 121.33 points. Sophomore distance runner Jette Beermann won Elon’s lone gold medal with a victory in the mile race.

Tuition, loan interest increase amplify Elon student concerns

Junior Jasmine Smith toured colleges knowing she might not be able to attend a four-year university without a scholarship. She had two choices in spring 2020 — the second semester of her senior year of high school —  pay upward of $62,000 per year for the University of the Arts in Philadelphia or pay what was $51,062 per year at the time.  Despite a scholarship, Smith is paying her tuition and fees out of pocket.
