Elon dedicates site of School of Communications expansion

Elon University President Leo Lambert remembers a phone call with Dwight Schar from last December, days after he and his wife donated $12 million for a number of university projects, including the School of Communications expansion. "OK, have the bulldozers shown up yet?" Schar asked. They arrived in May, and the construction has continued on the project that Schar's donation spearheaded.

Leonard Pitts Jr. challenges culture of innocence regarding racial bias

Society is locked in a continual struggle with the crime of innocence, according to Pulitzer Prize winner and Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. Pitts addressed a full crowd Sept. 24 at Elon University's McCrary Theatre on the topic of "Race in America," which he called a “big, scary topic" that the nation responds to with an “accepted script” when confronted with incidents of racial bias.

This coverage was a collaboration between Elon Local News' Alex Hager and The Pendulum's Tommy Hamzik and Sarah Wood Society is in a continual struggle with the crime of innocence, according to Pulitzer Prize winner and Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. He called race in America, also the title of his speech, a "big, scary topic" and that there's an "accepted script" the nation follows in incidents where a "brown person is singled out treatment that's harsh out of proportion based on the threat." There was the time 41 years ago, when Pitts walked out of a University of Southern California dormitory aside a white man, and Pitts was asked if he knew anything about a stolen bike.

Comedians, Amy Poehler and Nick Kroll are done after two years of dating.  US Weekly reported that the couple simply couldn't make it work due to their busy schedules, a source exclusively told US Weekly.  "Unfortunately, they just couldn't make the relationship work with their schedules," said one insider to the magazine who was close with both comedians.  Amy and Nick's love couldn't last because of their constantly busy schedules.  "They really tried, but it just wasn't realistic anymore," adds the source.

Elon University’s semiannual Job and Internship Expos offer students of all years opportunities to interact with potential employers. But these expos, including yesterday’s, have consistently focused on business students, with communications students receiving comparatively little attention and students of other schools receiving even less.

‘We've forgotten about the conversation’: HIV/AIDS still hits the South as awareness fades

45 years after the first reported cases of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., the fight against this disease is far from over, especially in the South. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the South accounted for 52% of all HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2023. "We know that HIV/AIDS has had a disproportionate effect on people of color or queer people of color in this country," Professor of communication studies at Vanderbilt University Jeff Bennett said. "You have many people living in rural areas. You might have distrust of medical providers, you have the social stigma.”
