After news broke of a North Carolina resolution claiming the state can make its own laws regarding the establishment of religion — one that would question the federal government’s authority to decide what is constitutional — email inboxes overflowed with complaints, comment boards became saturated with concerned citizens and watercooler conversations were abuzz. At Elon University, many students were misled by the influx of media reports from credible media outlets and social media sources.

Elon student’s documentary, 'We Will Prevail,' chosen for RiverRun International Film Festival

In the state of North Carolina, gay couples still await their right to be married. Elon University junior Madeline Carlin follows a Winston-Salem couple, Frank Benedetti and Gary Trowbridge, through the story of their almost 50-year relationship in her short documentary, “We Will Prevail.” “I chose the topic of gay marriage because Amendment One passed last spring and there was just a lot going on about it and I thought it would make a really great topic,” Carlin said. Amendment One, also known as the North Carolina Same-Sex Marriage Amendment, was a legislatively referred constitutional amendment that was passed in May 2012. The measure defines marriage as a union of one man and one woman.

Alexis Gray trial postponed until July

Alexis Gray’s trial, which was scheduled for April 10, was postponed until July 3. She will be tried at the Alamance County Courthouse. Gray, an 18-year-old student at Penn State University, entered Elon University’s campus Nov.

Family ties may be familiar offstage in upcoming Elon play 'August: Osage County'

Secrets will creep around the stage April 11 in Elon University’s McCrary Theatre. In the play, “August: Osage County,” the Weston sisters’ father disappears so they return to their childhood home to support their mother, who is addicted to pills. The performance is meant to entice many of its viewers to think about what they can expect from their own family members and what dysfunction in a family might do to its dynamic. Kirby Wahl, assistant professor of performing arts and director of the play said Tracy Letts, the writer of “August,” uses a difficult family dynamic to question the nature of people’s social structure. “Everybody has their own story,” he said.

Daunting stretch challenges first-place baseball team

Don’t look now, but the Elon University baseball team is on a roll. Having won 10 of its last 12 Southern Conference games, Elon has secured a 12-6 record in the conference, good for first place in front of 10-5 Georgia Southern University. Breaking from conference action for the next six games, the Phoenix has an opportunity to shake the college baseball universe starting tomorrow night, April 9, against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Phoenix take two of three from The Citadel

The Elon University baseball team is making a habit of scoring runs early and often. Most recently in it’s weekend series at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., the Phoenix got on the board in the first inning in two of the three games en route to taking two of three from the Bulldogs. In game one of the series, leadoff man Quinn Bower singled to lead off the game and worked his way around the bases to be knocked in on a fielder’s choice by junior first baseman Ryan Kinsella. The Bulldogs got the run back in the bottom of the second inning and the game stayed tied at one until the sixth inning when Kinsella scored junior center fielder Sebastian Gomez on a groundout to second base. The Citadel again responded an inning later, but this time took a 5-2 lead on three singles in the first four batters of the inning on Elon senior pitcher Dylan Clark.

Appalachian State sweeps softball in weekend series

In their return to conference play, the Elon University softball team experienced the all-too-familiar feeling of being swept in weekend series action, this time at the hands of the Mountaineers of Appalachian State University, 7-3, 8-5 and 7-1. In game one, sophomore pitcher Chelsea White again for the Phoenix and surrendered five runs in 2.2 innings.

Elon beats Furman to break school wins record

The Elon University women’s tennis team won their school record 17th match Sunday afternoon April 7 with a 5-2 victory at the Furman University Paladins in Greenville, S.C. The Phoenix improves to 17-3 on the year, 7-2 in Southern Conference play. Juniors Frida Jansaker and Jordan Johnston beat the Paldins duo of Lauren Kline and Alex Moreno-Kaste in the No.

Elon Town Council approves Elon University tax amendment, ordinances, resolutions

Elon Town Council discussed a tax amendment, approved its audit contract, and passed an ordinance for its purchase of property at 112 Orange Dr. The agenda for the meeting stated the property was at 112 Orange St., but this is incorrect. Elon Mayor Emily Sharpe wasn’t present for the meeting. Mayor pro tempore Monti Allison presided over the meeting Feb. 23.

Elon University enrollment drops below 6,000 for first time since 2018

Elon University’s undergraduate enrollment has dipped below 6,000 students for the first time since spring 2018, according to the Spring Registrar’s Report released Feb. 23. This decrease comes after an 11.6% drop in enrollment for the class of 2029. Part of this pattern can be attributed to the “demographic cliff,” the decreasing supply of college students from a falling national birth rate that began in 2007. The total undergraduate enrollment of 5,974 is a decrease from the 6,226 students the university reported in the spring of 2025. It’s also roughly 200 fewer students than the 6,191 reported in fall 2025. Though overall student numbers dropped, there was also an increase of 523 seniors, compared to the fall report.
