Student film “Street Picasso” advances to finals of Sprite Refreshing Films contest

The Sprite Refreshing Films contest accepted 200 applications from universities across the nation for funding for short films, and Elon University senior Dean Coots’ film is one of the four lucky finalists. After months of planning, casting, writing, research and, most of all, anticipation, Coots and his crew shot his original short film April 26.

Elon University debates nationwide gun control, violence

Members of the Elon and Burlington communities gathered May 1 to discuss issues, tensions and laws surrounding gun violence in the United States. The evening began with opening statements and concerns from community panelists, which consisted of Elon professors and students alike. “Taking a gun away from a person won’t make them any less violent,” said freshman Samantha Allen.

Chick-fil-A decision: Discrimination still tastes bitter

“There is no actionable cause to remove Chick-fil-A from campus.”  As an openly lesbian student who has spent the last year dealing with the issue of removing Chick-fil-A, this statement is a kick in the face.  To me, this says we have reviewed all of the facts, analyzed the policies and found no valid reason to remove this fast food establishment.  This says your feelings, identity and comfort on this campus are not enough of an “actionable cause.”  Because of the visible stand Chick-fil-A has made about its opinions of the LGBTQ community through financial donations and other statements, they have become a global symbol of anti-LGBTQ sentiment and discrimination.

It’s a win. After eight months of heated debate, the Elon University Board of Trustees, under guidance from the Vendor Policy Study Committee, has decided to keep Chick-fil-A as a university-affiliated food vendor.

Dear Elon and the Board of Trustees,

In light of the recent Chick-fil-A decision, I feel compelled to share a different perspective.  It seems that much of the discussion has revolved around the idea of freedom of expression, especially the expression of the “Christian” idea of family.  While I appreciate the desire to protect my right to free speech, I fear the Elon community is ill-informed of what it means to be a Christian. [quote]Christianity is not judgment.  Christianity does not shame or humiliate.  Christianity does not stand for the repression of others and it does not stand by silently when others are hurting.[/quote] I believe very strongly that my faith requires a life of action and love.

Chick-fil-A is here to stay: Elon makes the right decision

For the past school year, the hot topic all over Elon’s campus has been Chick-fil-A. Now, after months of protests, debates and research into the matter, the vendor policy group has come to a decision — the chicken is here to stay, and I, for one, am quite happy with this decision. Personally, I am fully in support of same-sex marriage.

"I kept getting phone calls from people who were also going to banquet saying Julia can you come help me with this, how do I do this, how do I mix a color to get this?" Caplan said.

Charlotte Mayor tapped as Secretary of Transportation

President Barack Obama officially named Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx as his nominee for Secretary of Transportation Monday afternoon. In his announcement from the White House East Room, Obama praised Foxx's record of creating jobs and making Charlotte more attractive for businesses. The President also tasked Foxx to start repairing the nation's infrastructure.

Elon Orchestra concert's classical music connects generations

On the evening of Tuesday, April 16, a classical performance by the Elon University Orchestra broke through barriers of age and experiences via a genre that is sometimes overlooked, but not lost. “Going to watch the Elon Orchestra was an experience that allowed me to continue to appreciate classical pieces of music and it proves the incredible talent that the university has to offer,” said Brian Delgado, a sophomore at Elon. Beginning with a charming rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” the orchestra played an array of classical music, with compositions ranging from the 17th century to the 20th century, including the “spring” and “summer” concertos from Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” The six pieces used in the performance were played at the level of a professional orchestra, according to director and music professor Thomas Erdmann.

Burlington Police sees increase in productivity through AI use

The Burlington Police Department may implement artificial intelligence to help officers write case reports. The department is using a program called Truleo, which BPD Intel Sgt. Misha Braja said the department has already used for almost two years to analyze body-worn camera footage. “Report writing is the bread and butter of law enforcement,” Braja said. “We have to document everything that we do.”

Elon’s long-time women’s golf head coach retires

The Elon University women’s golf head coach Chris Dockrill announced his retirement on April 20 after 27 years with the program.Women’s golf finished in 4th place this year in the Coastal Athletic Association tournament.
