Cost of tuition causes less money for financial aid

$38,460 is an ominous number. This is the total amount, including tuition, fees, room and board for an undergraduate to attend Elon University in the 2012-2013 school year. About 70 percent of Elon students receive some kind of scholarship, whether merit-based, need-based, talent-based or other, according to Patrick Murphy, director of financial planning. Both Murphy and Susan Klopman, vice president of admissions and financial planning, said the reason prices of scholarships aren’t as high is because the cost of tuition at Elon is lower than other similar private institutions.

Season-ending surgery in 2011 adds adventure to sophomore pitcher's college baseball career

There’s a man athletes all over the country want nothing to do with. His acquaintance is made out of necessity, not desire and his name alone sends shivers to those active in sport. His name is Dr. James Andrews, and Elon University pitcher Jim Stokes knows him all too well. Stokes was warming up in anticipation for his sophomore season on the diamond 14 months ago when things turned south.

Numerous miscues plague baseball at end of road swing

For every positive moment on the diamond last week, there were many negatives for the Elon University baseball team. There was the injury to center fielder Niko Fraser at North Carolina April 4, a probable concussion which kept him out for the Furman series and has his status unknown for the upcoming week. There was disaster on the mound.

Senegal rejoices for new president

Macky Sall defeated Abdoulaye Wade in the second round of presidential elections in Senegal March 25, and took office as the fourth Senegalese president April 2. The 2012 elections have been marked with strong opposition to the now former president, Abdoulaye Wade.

Morris Claiborne situation sheds light on sports journalistic integrity

By now everyone who has any sort of interest in sport has heard about Morris Claiborne. The former Louisiana State defensive back, entered into June’s NFL draft, scored a 4 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test,  an examination administered to all draftees. The problem is that Caliborne’s score, which is the lowest score any future draft pick has ever received, was supposed to remain confidential.

Elon students get paid to play

Financing college just got a whole lot more fun. Grantoo, a social gaming community that gives college students the chance to win tuition money and donate to charity, recently opened its website to Elon University students. Within the first week and a half of play, sophomores Taylor Pewitt and Katie Ryan each recieved the first place prize: a $1,000 scholarship. Pewitt placed first out of 73 students in the April 8 tournament, and Ryan placed first April 15.

Although discussions of public health issues are ongoing, Elon University recognized National Public Health Week April 2-6.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
