Phoenix earns walk-off win at Hatter Invitational

The Elon University softball team split a doubleheader for the second straight day to finish 2-2 at the Hatter Invitational hosted by Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. Campbell 3, Elon 0 In its first game of the day, Elon struggled to get anything going offensively and spoiled a solid outing by junior starter Chelsea White in dropping a 3-0 decision to Campbell University. The Camels jumped out to a 1-0 lead on sophomore first baseman Courtney Klingler’s home run over the wall in left field during the second inning. After holding the Phoenix scoreless in the top of the third, Campbell added another run on freshman right fielder Milly Martinet’s double into left field to score junior short stop Ericka Nesbitt, giving the Camels a 2-0 lead. Neither team’s offense could muster a rally in the next inning, but in the fifth, the Camels scored their final run on junior center fielder Stephanie Jones’s double into right center, which scored junior third baseman Brittany Bruce and provided freshman starter Katie Baker with just enough runs to secure the victory. White (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season despite giving up just three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out one. Elon 8, Bethune-Cookman 7 (8 innings) In the second game of Elon’s doubleheader, the Phoenix bats came alive after staying silent for two straight games, spurring a thrilling comeback in extra innings to send the team back to North Carolina with something to smile about. Freshman starter Alli Burdette struggled early for the Phoenix, giving the Wildcats a run on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning which put Bethune-Cookman up 1-0. The Wildcats would add a second run in the inning on freshman center fielder Destinee Williams’ single to left, scoring freshman first baseman Sabrina Anguiano. In the fourth, freshman third baseman Kaitlin Alamprese singled down the left field line to score junior left fielder Calesha Shelley and Williams and give the Camels a 4-0 lead. But the Phoenix would respond.

Elon baseball moves games to NC State

The Elon University athletic department announced Saturday, February 15, that this weekend's baseball series against the University of Cincinnati will be played at North Carolina State University. Due to the recent inclement weather, the playing surface at Latham Park is still unplayable, Elon announced.

Phoenix splits opening games at Hatter Invitational

The Elon University softball team split the first two games of the Hatter Invitational at Stetson University in drastically different outcomes. The Phoenix used a strong performance on the mound and timely hitting to beat Bethune-Cookman University but then was dominated in every facet of the game in a loss to Stetson Feb.

Retooled NBA Dunk Contest to be exciting once again

NBA All-Star weekend is one of the most exciting times of the NBA season.  The Skills Challenge, Three-Point Shootout, as well as the actual All-Star game are usually very entertaining for the fans. But one aspect of All-Star weekend that has been a huge letdown over the past few years has been the dunk contest. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, stars like Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins regularly headed the dunk contest lineup and always put on a show for the fans.  Even more recently, prolific dunkers like Vince Carter and Nate Robinson have made regular appearances in the event. But the last two dunk contests have been incredibly disappointing.  The last two winners were Jeremy Evans of the Utah Jazz in 2012 and Terrence Ross of the Toronto Raptors in 2013.  While some may recognize these names, most casual NBA fans do not.  And the purpose of NBA All-Star weekend is just that — to attract fans. Finally, it seems as though the NBA has realized how badly the dunk contest needs big-name talent.  This year’s contest, scheduled to take place during All-Star Weekend in New Orleans from Feb.

Five players to watch in the World Cup

With five months left until the soccer world turns its attention, and T.V. sets, to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, many players at their clubs are coming into great form. This is helping to provide a glimpse of things to come when the world’s brightest soccer stars meet on the sport’s biggest stage. Between the 32 teams that have qualified for the competition, stars young and old will come together to write their country’s name in the history books.

Budding Elon baseball team aims to continue tradition

There used to be a commercial for ESPNU that used the slogan, “Tradition never graduates.” The Elon University baseball team may have lost 16 players from last year’s Southern Conference Tournament champion squad, but that’s not an excuse to stop adding to the rich tradition of the program. “We don’t want to rebuild,” said Mike Kennedy, Elon head coach.

Winter weather delivers delays, closings, cancellations

A winter storm warning is in effect for Alamance County until 6 p.m. EST on Thursday. Snow will continue until 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, but Friday will bring a high of 41*F. Since early afternoon Wednesday, the Elon area has seen 4 to 6 inches of snow, sleet and ice, which has been the cause of many delays and closings in the area. Elon's Campus Dining has changed its hours for Thursday.

Students write and publish book over winter term

Winter Term classes can be stressful with a tight timetable, but Elon has a group of students who fought that timetable, and now their coursework can be bought across the world. Identity, culture shock and embracing independence are just a handful of issue students can face while traveling abroad. "Being in a place where you're not comfortable with anything, you really see who you really are underneath," said Jordan Joshua, an Elon Senior. This winter term, with the power of the pen, students who have studied abroad had an opportunity to share their experiences by writing a book. "It not only goes with the materialistic and the pretty surface level things of going abroad or coming back, but it also goes into deep personal analysis," said Emily Delaplane, a teacher's assistant to the class. Elon Professor Tom Arcaro set the pace for his class from day one without hesitation. "When he said we were going to be writing I book I thought... that's heavy," Joshua said. Despite the amount of work, Arcaro used teaching techniques that helped get the creative juices flowing. In a typical class you are assigned papers for work, but for this class, students wrote blog posts about specific personal experiences, some of which ended up in the book. Since 72 percent of Elon students study abroad before graduating, the class agreed on the importance of analyzing their life-changing experiences. "This is the reflection that students need when they come back, or before they go," Joshua said. The students aren't the only contributors.

Good life: Elon alumna lives dream

“It’s the little things” is a statement commonly heard on the topic of what makes life good. While each person has their own view of what makes their cup half full over the alternative, as a rule it’s best to crosscheck individual definitions of the good life with the Kanye West song. The “good life” is officially defined by West as a “living spree” — “the good life, it feel like Atlanta, it feel like L.A., it feel like Miami, it feel like N.Y.” If West’s lyrics allude to the truest of good lives, Elon University alumna Hannah Berg ’12 is living it out to a tee.

Alaska program offers new opportunities

After they complete final exams this spring semester, some Elon University students will abandon the continental United States and embark on the course to an internship program in Alaska. The Elon in Alaska program, adapted from a course that has been periodically offered for about a decade, now includes an 8-10-week internship component in 2014.

LIVE BLOG: 2026 primary elections in Alamance County, North Carolina

Polls across North Carolina opened at 6:30 a.m. March 3 for the 2026 midterm primary elections. In Alamance County, registered Democrats can vote for one candidate each for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives District 9 and NC Court of Appeals Judge Seat 3, and two candidates for Alamance County Board of Commissioners.

Election Center: Candidate profiles for the March 3 primary

Primary elections will be held March 3 in North Carolina. The Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate will be on the ballot. The winners of these races will face off in November during the general election for the open North Carolina Senate seat. Another race on the Republican ballot is Alamance County Sheriff, with incumbent Terry Johnson being challenged by two candidates. Other races for Board of County Commissioners, County Clerk of Superior Court and North Carolina Appeals Seat 1 are also on the ballot.
