Biking, bussing, and braving Bornholm: DIS students take on the rainy season

Beautiful, brazen and blustery Bornholm. The isolated island east of mainland Denmark is known for its vast lavender fields, steep cliffs and its well-known biking paths. The island itself is small but crowded, with nearly 40,000 inhabitants. But Bornholm’s biking paths seem endless, carrying bikers from historic, round churches to quaint harbor towns.

'Cloud Nine' examines gender issues, time shift absurdities

Theater of the absurd took on a new meaning this week, as Fred Rubeck, chair of the Department of Performing Arts at Elon, debuted Caryl Churchill’s 1979 play “Cloud Nine” in the Black Box Theatre. The play, which combined cross-dressing, a time jump and a huge helping of food for thought, presented an opportunity to laugh and ponder what people tend to overlook in their daily lives. Act I, set in British-ruled Africa, introduces Clive, a colonial administrator dedicated to his country, queen and family — a clan with more than its fair share of problems.

Flu Season at Elon

Flu season has hit Elon and the flu is spreading fast. The flu can spread by physical contact with everyday objects. "The sort of viruses we're talking about with the flu spread by what we call droplet spread," said University Physician Dr. Ginette Archinal. The keyboard you typed on or the lever you turned to grab a paper towel could be contaminated with flu virus. "When you do touch those things you touch your nose, you push your hair back you chew your fingernails you are spreading those droplets to yourself," said Dr. Archinal. There are some easy ways to prevent the flu.

National Day of Service generates new wave of volunteers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The service fair tent on the National Mall swelled with energy Jan. 19 as volunteers young and old convened to participate in the National Day of Service, an inauguration weekend tradition President Barack Obama initiated to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. The tent housed more than 100 charities and nonprofit organizations that provided hands-on opportunities for volunteers to learn about service and give back to others. Elon University senior Maddy Carretero recruited volunteers to get involved with Roots & Shoots, a service program for kids founded by Jane Goodall in 1991.
