Firsthand accounts of the Boston Bombings

Just over a week ago – at approximately 2:50 P.M. on Monday – two bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Elon University has 483 students from the state of Massachusetts, and Elon Professor Jeremy Tessem ran in the Boston Marathon. “I finished the race about 45 minutes before the first bomb exploded,” Tessem said.

The Last Word: The war on pollen

Every morning I awaken, and in the confusion between trying to turn an alarm off with an arm that fell asleep and wondering what day it is,  I remember the war that is consuming my life. The enemy is everywhere, and like Antoine “Bed Intruder” Dodson, I am on the constant lookout for it to climb into my bed. The enemy is pollen. And like Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen and any other young adult novel hero not including dead-eyed Bella Swan, I am looking to vanquish my mortal enemy. But unlike Harry Potter, I am without my support system and am calling on Elon students to apply for the positions of intelligent, and trustworthy female sidekick and useless, blubbering male best friend. Without my sidekick Hermione Granger, how will I ever learn to finish homework and vanquish evil, all the while maintaining a healthy social life? As for my Ron Weasley counterpart… well, Ron is pretty useless and abandoned his friend one too many times.  I can’t have a friend of mine abandoning me when I reach stardom shortly into my post-college career.

Faith Force athletes conjure power in The Lamb’s Chapel

In The Lamb’s Chapel in Haw River, a large countdown timer ticked down the minutes until Faith Force, a group of world-class athletes who use feats of strength to build and share faith, ran onto the stage. When the countdown reached zero, intense music reverberated around the auditorium and crew members set bricks on fire.

Center for Leadership encourages good deeds through Pay It Forward week

Making others feel important isn’t very difficult, according to freshman Kate Sims. Along with others from Elon University’s Center for Leadership, Sims is reaching out to the campus community to make sure that message is known — at least for a week. What the Center for Leadership used to recognize once a year as Pay it Forward Day is, for the first time, becoming a weeklong event from April 22-25.

Samford takes two of three, weekend series from Elon

Returning to the field for the first time since a car accident involving three players, the Elon University softball team took one game and dropped a pair against Samford University. Game One The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader saw the host Samford Bulldogs earn a 10-0 run rule-shortened, no-hitter victory. Freshman pitcher Kayla Caruso started for Elon and shut out the Bulldogs in the first inning.

Elon tennis teams advance to SoCon tournament finals

Sometimes scores can be deceiving. For the Elon University women’s tennis team, Saturday’s 4-0 win against a resilient Furman University team in the Southern Conference semifinals was just that. The Paladins clawed, scrapped and battled, refusing to go down as easily as they did on April 7 in Greenville, S.C., a 5-2 Elon win. “We knew it was going to be a little bit tougher to beat Furman this time because in the tournament everyone wants to win,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson.

With threatening skies overhead, the Elon University women’s tennis team dominated the Georgia Southern University Eagles from start to finish, winning the first four singles matches en route to a 4-0 shutout. “I was really proud of the team today,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson.

Instead of supporting actions that could help the economy recover, he opposes anything that doesn’t line up with his donors and his liberal agenda. One thing I find absolutely appalling is his position on putting the burden of our government overspending on American companies.

On April 12th Elon put on one of the biggest events of the year, Elonthon. Every year, miracle children and their families share their stories at the 24-hour dance marathon. "The only money that's raised is what you're doing," said Steve Martinelli, a father of a Duke Children's Hospital former patient.

Local healthcare clinic provides lifeline to uninsured Alamance County residents

Alamance County resident Valerie Epperson said she doesn’t think she would be alive right now if it were not for the Open Door Clinic of Alamance County, a clinic that provides free healthcare to people who do not have insurance. “When I first started, my diabetes were out of control, and I was just eating anything I wanted. It’s like, I just didn’t care,” Epperson said. “When you have someone there to help you, it keeps your mind open all the time about, ‘Hey, you need to do this. You need to stop doing this.’”
