Oct. 7 survivor, hero comes to Elon, shares how he saved 750 people

Rami Davidian, once a farmer, saved 750 people from the Hamas attack Oct. 7, 2023, at the Nova Music Festival in Israel. Elon Chabad, in collaboration with Elon Hillel and Elon Jewish Life, invited Davidian to speak at Elon University on Nov. 18 in Whitley Auditorium. Davidian stopped at Elon as part of his U.S. speaking tour. Joining Davidian was Millet Ben Haim, a survivor of the Oct. 7 attacks, who translated Davidian’s story from Hebrew to English. On the Oct. 7 attack at the music festival, Davidian helped Ben Haim escape from Hamas militants.

Daycare to open in psychology, human service student building

A senior student who wishes to remain anonymous found out in a meeting with his research mentor that his psychology research will need to be conducted in Lindner Hall instead of the psychology building. Next fall, the building on South Campus that currently houses the psychology and human service studies majors will become a child care facility. Originally, the student said he was told he, along with other researchers, would be asked to move by the end of October, but the move has now been pushed back until the end of the semester.

Burlington Preservation Salvage Shop saves historic homes from landfills

Inside a World War II quonset hut, a building shaped like a silver half-moon, lies two cased doors resting along tall wooden crates. This door sticks out in the Salvage Shop like a sore thumb; it’s the tallest object in the entire shop, but it’s also quite beautiful. The top of the door has a half-circle structure with details on it to look like rays of sun. Besides the fade and chipping of paint, this door remains completely intact and in decent condition. The only thing it was missing is its story.

Elon University women’s basketball wins thrilling game against Kent State

Elon’s women’s basketball team captured a thrilling 66-63 victory over Kent State University in a game defined by two halves — one full of mistakes and the other with an offensive explosion. Elon defeated Kent State inside Schar Center on Nov. 16 for its third home win of the season.  Elon moves to 3-1 with its first win over Kent State since 2005. The Phoenix has a tough game next as it plays Virginia Tech on the road at 2 p.m. Nov. 23.

Balanced offensive attack leads Elon football to victory

Elon University’s football team defeated the University of Maine 31-25 in the team’s final home game of the season. With over 400 total yards, and three rushing touchdowns from senior transfer running Rushawn Baker and a resilient defense in the second half, Elon led for the entire game. Elon improves its record to 5-6 this season and 4-3 in conference play. The Phoenix play its final game against North Carolina A&T State University at 1 p.m. next Saturday, Nov. 23.

Elon’s fall dance concert explores concept of unboxing

Emotions, relationships, pushing past spatial limits, AI, social media and technology — all topics to be “unboxed” in Elon University’s fall dance concert. Elon’s fall dance concert, “UnBoxed,” will feature pieces from professors, student choreographers and guests, all sharing their perspectives on the theme of unboxing something and thinking outside the box. Shows will run at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 and 16, and matinee performances will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 and 17 in Roberts Studio Theatre in Scott Studios. Tickets are free with an Elon ID or $15.

Native American Student Association promotes change, community

A primary goal for the Native American Student Association has been to develop more of a long-term relationship between Elon and the Occaneechi Band. However, the first step of this is to educate and unite Indigenous and non-Indigenous students across Elon, which begins with the organization’s meetings. NASA held “Crafting in the Commons” on Nov. 4 in Global Commons, which was one of three planned events to celebrate the month of November as Native American Heritage Month. The organization will host “Soil to Soul: Indigenous Planting” on Nov. 15 from noon to 2 p.m. in Moseley 221.

Elon Votes expands efforts to close voter participation gap on campus

Senior Bo Dalrymple said he has felt a different, more positive energy on campus this year regarding politics and civic engagement. The midterm elections voter rate across all institutions was 30.6% and Elon’s was 25% — 3.3% less than in 2018, according to data from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement. As co-coordinator for Elon Votes, Dalrymple said the organization has been working to increase the voter rate on campus and reach students politically who might be less likely to seek out civic engagement.

Elon Town Council to continue partnership with Link Transit, moves forward with energy audit of town facilities

The town of Elon held a town council meeting Nov. 12 and discussed energy audits and voted to continue the town’s partnership with Link Transit. The council also welcomed the first inaugural class of the Elon Police Citizens Academy. Town planner Isabell Cooper presented the council with potential options to conduct an energy audit on town of Elon facilities. The facilities include Town Hall, Public Works Main Building, Parks and Recreation Building, Fire Stations 8 and 18, and the Fire Tower.

Elon University department of political science hosts ‘After the Vote’ forum

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Elon University Department of Political Science hosted a panel of political science professors in East Neighborhood Commons to discuss the results of the recent election. The event was part of the Active Citizen Series, which held multiple forums and panels in the lead up to the national election about different issues within politics. This event is the last scheduled Active Citizen Series event for the semester, but there is another post-election discussion being held in Lakeside Meeting Room 212-214 on Nov. 14 at 4:30 p.m.

Martha and Spencer Love School of Business dean candidates present to faculty, staff

Since the outgoing dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, Raghu Tadepalli, announced his retirement in April 2024, a search committee has evaluated a pool of applicants and identified four final dean candidates. They were each hosted on campus in late October and early November to tour classes and present to Love School of Business faculty and staff. The presentation involved a 40-minute response to a prompt on how to respond to the demands of changing perceptions of the value of higher education and the increasing needs for both social responsibility and workforce readiness.

Elon Bursar worker remembered for caring spirit, philanthropy

Elon University student account specialist Susan “Sue” Harris was the “resident essential oil expert” and masterchef of the Bursar’s office, her coworker Alessandra Gabriel said. Coworkers remember her as someone who was always willing to help out when someone needed a hand.  Harris died unexpectedly due to complications with pancreatic cancer Sunday, Nov. 10., according to an email sent by Elon President Connie Book to students and staff. Harris’ best friend Leesa Holley said she was diagnosed with cancer three months ago, having had a heart attack three weeks prior to her diagnosis. She died at 57-years-old.

Q&A: Retired admiral shares ways to support veterans, hopes for next administration

As a part of the Veterans’ Day events --- Elon hosted retired Adm. Mike Mullen to kick off the Carol Ann Walker International Lectureship Series. As Mullen spoke to veterans and other Elon community members in McCrary Theatre on Nov. 11, he shared the ways in which the U.S. can better support veterans as they transition from active duty service to civilian life. Mullen sat down with Elon News Network to discuss his views on the current state of support for veterans.

Elon University tunes into first-ever SUBFest with student performances

Elon University's Student Union Board hosted its first SUBFest on Nov. 8, an outdoor music festival featuring live performances, student-run businesses and giveaways. In partnership with Limitless, Limelight Records and WSOE, the event aimed to provide students with an afternoon of entertainment in Young Commons. Junior Caroline Reich, the graphic design chair of the Student Union Board, said the idea of SUBFest was inspired by her experience at a college music festival that she attended before coming to Elon.

Elon University men’s soccer falls to Hofstra in CAA semifinals

2021, 2022 and now 2024: all Elon men’s soccer postseason losses to Hofstra. It seems the Phoenix has met its match as Elon lost to Hofstra in the 2024 Coastal Athletic Association Tournament semifinals 2-0 on Nov. 10. This is the second straight year Elon has lost in the semifinals. Elon trails Hofstra 1-11-1 all-time. Despite Hofstra’s 4th seed being the lowest seeding in the CAA Tournament since 2017, the Hofstra Pride upset the top-ranked Elon squad. It was a heartbreaker for an Elon squad who is still searching for their first ever CAA Championship.

Elon University men’s basketball team commands home opener win

The Elon University men’s basketball team defeated Bluefield 103-66 to win their first game of the season Nov. 9. It was a strong outing for the Phoenix, who lost 90-76 against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in a tough battle Nov. 4. Elon led wire-to-wire after the 12:28 mark in front of an energetic crowd for their first home game of the season. The victory gives Elon a 1-1 record. It is their sixth straight win at Schar Center to open the season. Elon will rest for six days before traveling to face Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Nov. 15.

Elon University women’s basketball defeats Gardner Webb despite poor shooting

Elon University women’s basketball secured a closely fought 69-61 victory over Gardner Webb University despite a rough shooting night. Elon was coming off its season opener on Nov. 4 against High Point University where they got a thrilling 66-65 comeback victory and was looking to get a 2-0 start at Schar Center on Nov. 8. The first half was tightly contested, but both teams exhibited sloppy play, chock full of turnovers and missed shots. Both teams were under 40% from the field, and the Phoenix was even missing a number of free throws.

University president outlines plans for diversity, student support, campus growth

Elon Student Government held an event with Elon University President Connie Book and Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley to discuss topics such as raising the federal Pell Grant threshold and how election results might affect university plans. Dooley addressed the university’s approach to balancing activism and safety on campus. He emphasized that Elon encourages students and community members to engage in activism and voice their opinions on difficult or contentious issues in ways that align with the university's values. Freshman Olivia Glover said she came to the event to ensure students feel supported and safe enough to express themselves.

Elon invites hope through public art display post elections

Hugs, smiles, tears and words of encouragement filled Haggard Avenue on Nov. 6 following the election results between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, former President Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States. Elon University invited students, staff and faculty to express words of hope on the portion of Haggard Avenue in front of Young Commons — closing the road from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to showcase and work on their public art display.

Donald Trump elected 47th president of U.S.

The 2024 election has been noted as one of the closest races in U.S. history with candidates Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump fighting for the 47th spot in the Oval Office. After a neck-and-neck campaign season and election night, the winner was declared to be Republican Donald Trump — marking his second term in office. This election cycle was much closer, with early voting polls showing Harris leading by 1% nationally, and Trump winning by 1% in many southern states. As of 5:36 a.m. on Nov. 6, Trump won 277 electoral votes, while Harris won 224.
