Alamance County is now in a Local State of Emergency following storm damage caused by Tropical Storm Chantal on July 6.
Orange, Moore and Preston Counties, which were also damaged by Tropical Storm Chantal are also in a Local State of Emergency.
One person was confirmed to have died in Alamance County due to the weather event, according to the Alamance County Sheriff's Office.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein visited Alamance County on July 8 to survey damage due to the storm.
"Our hearts go out to the families who lost a loved one during the storm," Stein said during a press conference at Lake Michael Park in Mebane. "I am grateful to the local and state emergency responders who worked quickly to evacuate people and keep so many people safe. As counties across central North Carolina continue to recover, we will be there to support them."
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for central North Carolina from 2:00 p.m. July 9 to 2:00 a.m. July 10 due to predicted thunderstorms in the area.
The damage caused by Tropical Storm Chantal hit central North Carolina less than 10 months after Hurricane Helene struck the western portion of the Tar Heel State.
According to director of North Carolina Emergency Management Will Ray, North Carolina’s Emergency Response Team and other state and local partners are still assessing and navigating the damage of Tropical Storm Chantal.
