Elon Town Council discusses proposal for new mixed-use development

The Elon Town Council held a meeting March 11 to discuss plans to construct a new mixed-use development at the southwest intersection of University Drive and North Williamson Avenue. If the town council votes to approve the development, Parc Village will be located behind the Schar Center, in close proximity to Elon University property. Though the development is so close to campus, developers will not be able to build pedestrian access between the two sites unless the university agrees to the idea, according to Lori Oakley, town planning director.

Elon’s Music Theatre Department helps close out a historic era for the Paramount Theater

“West Side Story,” “Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd” — only a few of Stephen Sondheim’s works that the Burlington Paramount Theater will be celebrating in “95 Years of Stephen Sondheim.” At 7 p.m. March 13, Elon’s Music Theatre Department will perform “95 Years of Stephen Sondheim” to close out the Burlington Paramount Theater before its year and a half long renovation and expansion. Director of the Paramount Theater Eric Kerchner said the renovations hope to bring more people to downtown Burlington and create a space unique to the area.

SGA announces election results for the 2025-26 school year

Over 2,000 students voted in the SGA elections for the 2025-26 school year, only 28% of the student body. A higher turnout from last year's election which saw only 1,308 ballots cast. Anya Bratic was elected student body president with 1,382 votes. Sammy Azua was elected executive vice president with 1,082 votes compared to Morgan Minoff’s 838 votes. In the election, three semi-finalists were chosen for senior class commencement speaker: Craig Brandstetter, Drew Fetterolf and Marques Walker. The three semi-finalists will share their speeches with a selection committee who will make recommendations to Elon University President Connie Book.

Student-run fashion show generates massive turnout, champions international, timeless apparel

With every seat taken in Yeager Hall, Elon junior Kaia Brown’s “Flashback Fashion” debuted at 7:45 p.m. March 7, bridging students, community members, and families through international and timeless apparel. Inspired by the iconic runways of Gucci and Versace, the junior student aimed for each model’s walk to reflect their personality, complement their outfit, and align with the runway soundtrack, mixed by DJ and mixing engineer Naila Ware. The event was envisioned as a “teaser” for next year’s fashion show.

Elon University men’s basketball loses to Drexel in CAA Tournament, 23 point halftime deficit too much to overcome

Despite one of its best regular seasons in years, the Elon University men’s basketball season ended early as it lost to Drexel in the second round of the CAA Tournament 91-74 where the Drexel Dragons dominated from opening tip off. Elon was coming off a 3-game losing streak amid the absence of two of its top three scorers this season in sophomores Nick Dorn and TJ Simpkins. Simpkins, sporting an ankle brace, made his return against Drexel, hoping to provide a spark to Elon.

Joe Gatto performs at Elon University

Joe Gatto, American comedian, producer and actor performed as one of the last events of Elon Day on March 6 in Alumni Gym. Gatto starred in Impractical Jokers, a hidden-camera comedy television series, before leaving in 2021, and is on tour throughout cities and college campuses. The doors to the event, hosted by Elon’s Student Union Board, opened at 8:00 p.m. in Alumni Gym with Gatto stepping onstage at 8:30 p.m. but some students began lining up, such as freshman Alanna Urteaga, as early as 4:30 p.m.

Elon Baseball falls to Charleston Southern in first game of series

In a challenging matchup at Latham Park, the Elon Phoenix faced off against Charleston Southern, ending the game with a disappointing 7-2 loss. Despite showing promise in the early innings, Elon’s three defensive errors in the seventh and eighth inning cost the Phoenix the game. The game started off with the Buccaneers scoring off a combination of a walk, a stolen base and a fly-out — which advanced a runner home. Despite this, starting pitcher Justin Mitrovich was able to hold the Buccaneers’ score after that initial hiccup, ending with 6 strikeouts.

Elon University raises over $3 million during 12th annual Elon Day

Elon University celebrated its 12th annual Elon Day on March 6, 2025, with a series of events and opportunities designed to engage the campus community and alumni worldwide. Highlights of the day included a special edition of the university's tradition, College Coffee, and a comedy performance by Joe Gatto. According to the Elon Day website, Elon raised the most money in Elon Day history, with over $3.1 million and a total of 6,385 gifts. Elon Day serves as a cornerstone for the university’s philanthropic efforts, encouraging donors to support areas of campus that resonate personally with them.

Elon Student Government candidates discuss leadership, student concerns, campus engagement at candidate forum

Candidates for Student Government Association gathered for a forum on March 5 to discuss issues facing students. The event featured candidates for executive president, Nic Fillippa and Anya Bratic, and executive vice president, Sammy Azuza and Morgan Minoff, each addressing topics including student engagement, and collaboration with university organizations. These are the two top roles in SGA and both positions receive a stipend of $8,000 for the term, according to Elon News Network coverage from 2022. The forum took place at Oak House, drawing an audience of approximately 20 people.

40 candidates running in Elon’s Student Government Elections

Elon’s Student Government Association election season is underway. Voting begins starting at 8 a.m. March 10 and ending 5 p.m. March 11. Students can place their votes on PhoenixConnect. There are a total of 40 students running across all positions, including two candidates for each elected executive position — executive president and executive vice president. Last year, no student initially applied for student body president. The election results will be announced at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11 at Medallion Plaza.

Elon Spring Dance Concert brings light out of the void to McCrary Theatre

Emanation — emerging out of the void, being a bright light in darkness, having hope and internal reincarnation. These are all definitions of emanation and what the choreographers are exploring for Elon University’s Spring Dance Concert. Elon’s Spring Dance Concert entitled “Emanation” will feature a diverse group of dance styles and choreographers all centered around the various definitions of emanation. The show will run in McCrary Theatre with evening shows at 7:30 p.m. March 7 and 8 and matinees at 2 p.m. March 8 and 9.

Burlington Recreation & Parks sees delay in building of new pickleball courts

A place where the community now plays tennis will soon be home to a new type of court — pickleball. Seventeen new courts are expected to open at Burlington City Park with six courts at Fairchild Park. However, five months have passed since the anticipated opening date in September 2024. The $4 million project set to open in the fall has been delayed for a variety of factors such as weather and timing and has no new announced opening date, said Davis Montgomery, capital projects manager for the city of Burlington.

Elon University to continue normal operations during possible severe weather

Elon University will continue all normal campus operations on March 5 despite the possibility of severe weather conditions according to an email from Vice President of Student Life, Jon Dooley. Three weather alerts were issued for the Elon-Burlington area Wednesday morning. The U.S. National Weather Service issued a tornado watch at 7:45 a.m. which will be in effect until 1 p.m, a severe thunderstorm warning from 9:35 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and a wind advisory from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sombreros and Sluggers: Eastern Alamance soars to 17-1 victory with explosive offense

Eastern Alamance Softball secured a 17-1 victory over Person High School on March 4, fueled by a strong offensive showing. After a slow start and not scoring the first inning, the Eagles broke through with a four-run second inning. After their scoreless first inning, the Eagles scored four runs in the second thanks to a two-run shot. A grand slam in the third put the game out of reach, and a dropped catch ended the game early after only three innings.

Chapel Hill shuts out Williams behind 17-strikeout performance

Williams High School batters stepped up to the plate on Monday night. Most, however, didn’t stay for long. Chapel Hill’s starting pitcher Channing Clark was unhittable in the team’s game against Williams. She retired 17 of 21 batters faced via the strikeout, leading her team to a 10-0 shutout victory over Williams. After surrendering a leadoff walk, Clark retired the next seven batters in a row, all by way of striking out. Williams will face off against Western Alamance at 5 p.m on March 4.

Elon nursing program receives accreditation

Elon University’s nursing program received accreditation after four years of the program’s existence from the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation, after launching in fall 2021. The School of Health Sciences currently offers two programs for students majoring in nursing — a traditional four year program or an accelerated 16 month program for students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree in another discipline.

Elon University receives ‘A’ in ADL second campus report card

The Anti-Defamation League has released its second campus report card — this time, evaluating 135 institutions. Elon University received an ‘A’, along with Brandeis University, CUNY Queens College, CUNY Brooklyn College, Florida International University, University of Alabama, University of Miami, and Vanderbilt University. Last year, Elon and Brandeis University were the only two schools to receive the top grade. Out of the 135 surveyed institutions, 49 schools received a grade of “A” or “B,” and 41 schools received a “D” or “F.”

Elon women’s basketball team stuns No. 1 seed NC A&T with late comeback on Senior Day

Through the first 36 minutes of the game, not much was going right for the Elon University women’s basketball team. Despite multiple comeback attempts, North Carolina A&T always seemed to have an answer. Yet head coach Charlotte Smith refused to accept defeat. She kept telling her players to believe they would come back even during the fourth quarter where it seemed like A&T would notch its 18th win of the season.

Elon Lacrosse falls short to Notre Dame 8-4

Elon Lacrosse faced a tough opponent in ranked Notre Dame, showcasing glimpses of tactical brilliance but ultimately fell short with a final score of 8-4 in favor of the Fighting Irish. The game was closely contested in the first half with Elon being down by a goal, but momentum shifted in the second half.

Elon University’s 11th annual Black Solidarity Conference spotlights legacy, impact

For the 11th year, the Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education at Elon University hosted the Black Solidarity Conference on Feb. 28. An event welcome to all students, this year’s message focused on how the Black population creates a legacy and inspires a sense of community. The words “influence, innovation, and legacy” were draped across the front of McKinnon Hall which summarized the essence of the conference.
