Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

Making snowflakes is an activity children do every year, but on Saturday, January 5th the children in Graham were designing snowflakes for a cause. "We're going to send them to the kids in Connecticut to the Sandy Hook Elementary School," explained nine-year-old Delilah Bose. In response to the Connecticut PTA's nationwide call for the victims of Sandy Hook, Susan Holland organized this event. "The children should walk into a winter wonderland," Holland vividly explained, "the idea that each snowflake is different from one another, there are no two alike.

Inaugural Parade Celebrates Past and Present

Crowds gathered in Raleigh Saturday morning to welcome the man they elected into office. In his speech, Governor McCrory shared his high hopes for the next four years. McCrory said, "Working together, we can make North Carolina the place of unlimited opportunity: a place where anyone who studies hard, works hard and lives a life with high values, can fulfill and even exceed their potential." After the speech, the crowd gathered along the parade route to get a glimpse of the new governor.

Elon Compliments fills student newsfeeds with personalized positivity

When Elon students log onto Facebook, they never have to fear a shortage of sorority photos or a scarcity of Instagram campus shots. As of late, they’ll also never again go without a consistent flow of heartwarming statuses about their peers, thanks to Elon Compliments, a Facebook page with nearly 2,500 friends that “aims to spread joy and love to the Elon community,” according to the organization’s profile. In order to start spreading this love, all one has to do is “inbox a compliment or a message of appreciation that you may have about a member of the Elon community, and have it published [on the page] anonymously.” But the posts are more than just an average compliment.

This past weekend, Greensboro officials partnered up with community leaders to help with gun control right here in the Triad. Handguns, shotguns, rifles and ammunition were all collected at Saint Matthew's United Methodist Church, Bessemer United Methodist Church and Christ Wesleyan Church on Friday and Saturday.

In its return to Southern Conference play, the Elon University Phoenix dropped an 80-70 decision to the Appalachian State University Mountaineers in Boone this past Saturday. Elon jumped out to a 9-2 lead behind sophomore guard Austin Hamilton and junior forward Ryley Beaumont.

FDA may approve genetically engineered salmon for human consumption

Genetically engineered Atlantic salmon may soon become the first transgenic animal to be sold in grocery stores and supplied by food service vendors across the country, possibly including ARAMARK, Elon University’s food supplier. The fish swam a bit closer to FDA approval when the administration released a draft of its environmental assessment affirming the modified salmon does not pose a considerable environmental threat last month. In 2010, the FDA concluded the genetically altered AquaAdvantage salmon was safe for human consumption, generating controversy among proponents and opponents of biotechnology. The modified salmon, engineered by AquaBounty Technologies at Prince Edward Island and grown in tanks in Panama, grow nearly twice the size of conventional Atlantic salmon at a faster growth rate.

University presidents advocate campus gun control after Conn. shooting

In the wake of the Newtown shooting last month, more than 320 university presidents in the United States have signed a petition against legislation for legal possession of firearms on university campuses. Although Elon University President Leo Lambert has not signed the petition, Elon strictly prohibits the possession or use of weapons on university property.

Inaugural Celebration ties up a week of festivities

Pat McCrory and guests gathered at the Raleigh Convention Center on Saturday for a final celebration to end a week of inaugural events. The night had a "Nothing Could Be Finer" theme, featuring music, food and decorations that come from the area. The walls of the main ballroom were adorned with scenes from various regions of North Carolina, including the coast and mountain regions. The menu consisted of samples of pork barbeque, fried green tomatoes, and Cheerwine cupcakes. While many public and political figures were in attendance, there were some younger groups joining in the fun as well. Eighth grader Dillon Wingo was at the Convention Center with a friend and said she wanted to "eat food, listen to music and just celebrate." Another guest, Chip Neff, contributed to McCrory's campaign and said it was important to expose younger generations to the political process early. "I thought there would be nothing better than to bring my fourteen year-old daughter and one of her friends to see what promises are being made and when they reach my age, they get a chance to see whether or not they've been delivered on," Neff said. Even the newly elected governor himself believed in the power of the young. "One of my goals is to get young people involved in the political process.

Manchester United off to a hot start in Premier League

The 2012/2013 Barclays Premier League season is in full swing and is just coming off the busy holiday season in which all teams played four games in 12 days. The season is now just more than half over and Manchester United has emerged as the team to beat.  United have won the league a record 19 times, so being at the top of the table is not strange place for the Red Devils. However, this season has been especially important. Last year was a sheer disappointment. It all started on a cold December 2011 day in Basel, Switzerland where United lost not only a game, but their captain Namanja Vidic for the season to injury.  The loss for United also meant they were eliminated from the Champions League.  Six months later, United lost the league title on the final day of season in the most dramatic day in English soccer history.

Elon faculty, students bear weight of federal budget decision

As the United States hung suspended from the “fiscal cliff” early this month, both the Senate and the House of Representatives approved legislation to raise taxes on America’s wealthiest and suspend deep cuts in federal spending, a complicated last-minute deal that may directly impact taxpayers in every income bracket, including Elon University students, faculty and staff. By passing the legislation, Congress narrowly averted automatic tax increases and federal budget sequestration cuts scheduled to take effect at the start of the New Year, but the deal is likely to affect other changes in the economic climate.

Assistant Professor of Music Theatre Jacob Brent is reconnecting with the musical that launched his Broadway career. Decades after his debut in “Cats,” he is returning to the whimsical world as a member of the producing team for its newest revival, “CATS: The Jellicle Ball,” opening on Broadway April 7.
