Elon releases CAA basketball schedule

Today Elon University released the men's basketball Colonial Athletic Association schedule for the 2014-2015 season. This marks Elon's first year in the CAA, which is widely regarded as one of the top mid-major conferences in college basketball.

Elon's Mary Tendler preaches higher standard as bigger challenges approach

Average just isn’t good enough anymore for Elon University volleyball coach Mary Tendler. The Phoenix was 16-17 a year ago and ranked right in the middle of the pack in both the Southern Conference standings and most league statistical categories. That’s why this year, as the team enters the much tougher Colonial Athletic Association, Tendler is encouraging her players to have higher expectations. Each player thinks of different things when it comes to expectations on and off the court.

'Lessons within Ferguson, MO.' opens communication within Elon

"It just feels as if it's a bad dream for everyone." Elon student and Ferguson resident Mia Ginae Watkins remembers pacing around the house while watching news updates in disbelief with her family on August 9, when an unarmed 18-year-old African-American male named Michael Brown was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Mo. "Behind my backyard is the main street where the riots took place," said Watkins, a third-year student.

Love School of Business revamps curriculum

As technology improves, the world continues to change at an exponential rate. To keep up with a world forever changed by computing power, Elon University’s Love School of Business is altering the courses and curriculum for the new school year to teach students how to solve problems and analyze data. The business school is offering seven new courses, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, to instruct students in data analysis.

‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ movement comes to Elon

Nearly three weeks after unarmed teenager Michael Brown was fatally shot by police on August 9 in Ferguson, Missouri, the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” movement has arrived at Elon University, in the form of more than 100 people posing for an awareness-raising photo on Phi Beta Kappa Commons Tuesday during the first College Coffee of the new school year. The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity (APA) brought the movement to Elon’s campus, beginning at College Coffee on August 26.

For sophomores and upper classmen, phoenix cards are about to get an upgrade, and yes, students may get their pictures retaken. The university is moving to contactless, nonswipe cards, which first year students have already received.

CAA move hits home for Elon athletes

With the new school year comes a new conference for the Phoenix. Elon officially left the Southern Conference for the Colonial Athletic Association this summer. When President Leo Lambert announced Elon's move to the CAA in May of 2013, he said a major reason the university swapped conferences was to increase Elon's name recognition throughout the country. "What's the best thing for the institution as a whole, for name exposure for Elon, and continued growth in institutional reputation," Lambert said.

Last year, Elon Local News gave you the inside scoop on YouTube vlogger, Powell Mansfield. Now that Mansfield is a senior, we decided to follow up on his future plans as an entertainer who promoted himself through a free social media platform. The Elon senior is a double-major in Media Arts and Entertainment and French who has been very campus-involved during his college career.
