Under the Oaks: Class of 2018 Meets for Convocation

ELN crew participates in Sports Fest

It's Elon University's 125th birthday this year and to celebrate, members of the ELN Morning crew took part in an Elon tradition that began in 1999: Sports Fest. On Friday, August 30, 73 teams took to the South Campus fields to participate in six events: dodgeball, a three-legged sack race, tug-o-war, a crossfit challenge, as well as relay and sponge races. With teams ranging from 8-10 players, nearly ten percent of the student body was registered for Sports Fest. [div class ="aligncenter"][/div] Teams traveled from event to event, battling it out for a first place finish.

Mold On Campus

While some students were greeted by orientation leaders this weekend, others were greeted by an unwelcome guest in their homes. Mold was found in some areas on campus from the Danieley Center to Mill Point. Physical Plant was on call during new student move in to deal with any problems in student's rooms, including signs of mold. Director of Physical Plant, Robert Buchholz, said that North Carolina's recent wet weather might be the cause. "The humidity is very high and you can start mildew and some mold growth that's not hazardous," Buchholz said.

College Street Taphouse, Town Table To Close

Two off-campus favorites for Elon students are shutting their doors. Town Table closed on August 16 and, according to an Elon Local News exclusive interview on Wednesday with President Leo Lambert and Senior Vice President Gerald Whittington, College Street Taphouse will be closing as early as August 17. Lambert and Whittington said the bar and restaurant are closing for economic reasons. There are not any current plans for what will fill the spaces.

Elon Town Manager Passes Away

Elon's town manager of 23 years, Mike Dula, died Sunday June 30. He was 63-years-old and battled cancer for several months, according to the Burlington Times-News. Dula supervised projects including Elon University's construction and the Town of Elon housing expansion.

Police responded to a gunpoint home invasion robbery at 4 a.m. Saturday on the 200 block of Neal Street. Elon Town Police are searching for two suspects.

Alexis Gray Released From ARMC

Alexis Gray, the 18-year-old who Elon administrators say arrived armed on campus last Sunday, was released this morning from Alamance Regional Medical Center, according to an email from Dr. Smith Jackson, Vice President and Dean of Student Life. The email says Gray was "immediately served a warrant for felony possession of a weapon on a college campus." Jackson says that she was then taken into custody and transported to Alamance County District Court where a judge issued a temporary commitment order.
