Elon University announced Shaquille O’Neal, also known by his stage name DJ Diesel, as its homecoming performer for the university’s annual Rock the Block show. Elon made the announcement on its social media account Sept. 14 after a month of speculation.
O’Neal, who is primarily known for his career as a professional basketball player with the Los Angeles Lakers, also carved out a music career in the ‘90s, continuing past his sports retirement.
He’s released four studio albums, with his 1993 debut, Shaq Diesel, earning platinum certification. O’Neal also collaborated with artists including The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z and Method Man throughout his music career.
The artist has continued his involvement in music in recent years through his career as DJ Diesel, performing electronic dance music at festivals and venues across the country. As of 2026, his music has more than 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
Rock the Block is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at Young Commons.
