Elon Dance Company prepares for spring show

Although it still feels like winter outside, the Elon University Dance Company is hard at work preparing for this year’s spring dance concert, titled “Looking Back to Spring Forward.” The show will run March 13 to 15 in McCrary Theatre.

Elon's new all-female a cappella group takes stage

Every semester, Elon University students flock to auditions to try their hands at a cappella. Group singing without instruments has become increasingly popular, so landing a spot in a group is no easy task. According to sophomore Alexis Paul, hundreds of students audition each semester, but fewer than ten are chosen for each group. Seeing that the demand for a cappella groups drastically outweighed the supply, Paul took it upon herself to create a new group, Shirley Tempos. “There is always a demand for more a cappella groups on campus with the popularity of interest,” Paul said. Paul created the all-female group to give girls a greater opportunity to be involved in a cappella.

Mental mistakes fuel Elon loss to Liberty

While it wasn’t the prettiest of games, it still says something that perhaps the most intriguing part of it was the aftermath. After a 4-2 loss to Liberty University at Latham Park March 11, Elon University head coach Mike Kennedy spent more than 15 minutes talking to his team in the outfield. Topic discussed included errors, mental mistakes and the team morale. “Our effort wasn’t good,” Kennedy said.

Syracuse starter contains Elon

The Syracuse University softball team used the long ball in one big inning and a dominant performance in the circle from freshman starter Sydney O’Hara to hand Elon University a 5-0 loss at Hunt Softball Park March 11. After three scoreless innings, the Orange plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, freshman catcher Nicole Lundstrom singled to right, and junior second baseman Julie Wambold drew a walk.

Elon Founders Day kicks off with College Coffee

Elon University celebrated its 125th birthday with a special College Coffee to honor Earl Danieley, Fred Young and current university president Leo Lambert. Hundreds of students, faculty and alumni gathered on Phi Beta Kappa Commons to hear student body president Welsford Bishopric speak and share in Elon’s birthday cake. “This Founders’ Day is extra special because of the 125th birthday and the beautiful turnout,” said Dianne Ford, a science librarian at Elon.

Bitcoin redefines traditional currency as digital alternative

For many people, the first time they saw or heard the term “Bitcoin,” it was on the pages of the business section or on CNBC or Fox Business as analysts reported that large quantities of the digital currency went missing. While there are only around 200,000 registered Bitcoin addresses with at least one bitcoin, what made the news of this relatively underused digital currency grab headlines is that the disappearance of these bitcoins represented a loss of around $460 million. Bitcoin was the first “cryptocurrency,” created in 2009 as an all-digital form of money that can be spent between individuals using a peer-to-peer public ledger that keeps track of all transactions. While many other forms of digital currency have come since Bitcoin was unveiled, including the Canadian government-backed MintChip, Bitcoin has remained the most widely used cryptocurrency. “You assign your computer to do some hard math problems in its spare time and when it’s done, you’ve mined one bitcoin.

Stroll-Off ties university with Elon community

Dancing, cheering, screeching and a lot of shouting filled Alumni gym, Saturday, March 8. It was all a part of the second annual Stroll-Off, hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. This year they had a special opening act. "The Alphas approached us and wanted some of our Boys and Girls Club kids to be part of the show, to be the opening act," said Tara Nager, Alamance County Boys and Girls Club Program Director.
