Classes were canceled, and Elon University’s Young Commons was blanketed in snow. Within a matter of seconds, what was once a quiet scene of fresh snowfall became a full-fledged battlefield, and white balls of fluff were flying in every direction.

Two months in, Skrosky preaching 'process' in changing Elon football

Elon University head football coach Rich Skrosky uttered the phrase “Embrace the Grind” at his first press conference on the job. Since taking over in December, Skrosky has faced a grind of his own to begin the overhaul of the Phoenix program, which now uses that same phrase as its mantra. Having spent a little more than two months at the helm, Skrosky has worked his way through three major tasks that awaited him upon his arrival. First, with Elon being his first head coaching job in more than 20 years, Skrosky assembled a staff of assistant coaches.

Smith Jackson warns of potential indecent exposure

Elon Campus Police are investigating a potential indecent exposure incident that occurred on Tuesday, February 18 at the intersection of Haggard and O'Kelly Avenues. According to the police report, a female Elon student witnessed a male driver in a silver Nissan Titan expose himself. The driver asked the female a question, according to an email sent by Vice President of Student Life Smith Jackson. "As she approached the truck she saw the man was exposing himself," Jackson said.

Proposed master plan brings major changes to downtown Elon

The Town of Elon has proposed a new revitalization plan that would restructure the eight-block area known as downtown Elon. The plan calls for the construction of 10 mixed-use buildings, six residential buildings, an office space and a civic/hospitality space. The first floor of the mixed-use buildings will house retails and restaurants, while the upper floors will serve as either offices or residential spaces depending on the building.

‘Vagina Monologues’ helps fight abuse against women

Every year on Valentine’s Day, people around the world perform “The Vagina Monologues” as part of an international movement called the V-Day Campaign. Friday evening, EFFECT and Women’s/Gender Studies presented Elon University’s own version of the show in Whitley Auditorium. The campaign fights against and helps raise awareness about violence against women. “I think ‘The Vagina Monologues,’ because of its theatrical nature, provides a unique way for Elon students of all genders to really think about what it means to be a woman in the world today,” said director Jessie Bond, a junior theater studies major. Cost of entry was $5, and all proceeds went to Family Abuse Services in Burlington. “One goal is to raise money to stop violence against women,” Bond said.

SGA's no-contest election: Many run unopposed, executive presidency competitive

Elon takes second game, series against Cincinnati

The Elon University baseball team took the latter end of a two-game series with the University of Cincinnati, topping the Bearcats 3-1 at North Carolina State University. Junior Jake Stalzer went seven innings on the hill to earn the win, allowing one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts.

NC abortion provision heads to appeals court

North Carolina is the catalyst for one of the first appeals court hearings on the constitutionality of “speech and display laws.” Speech and display laws require a patient seeking an abortion to receive an ultrasound beforehand while a doctor gives a medical description of the fetus displayed. A 2011 law in North Carolina contained a speech and display provision, which was deemed unconstitutional by U.S.

NCAA to allow Snapchat as recruiting tool for coaches

The world of college recruiting is about to get very interesting and a bit more personal. Now that the NCAA is allowing college coaches to communicate with prospects via Snapchat, getting a “selfie” from Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski could be in the cards for potential student-athletes. And if that happens, you better take a screenshot. This policy will officially start August 2014.

AAC basketball exceeding expectations in inaugural year

As the old Big East Conference split apart and the newly formed American Althletic Conference was formed with holdovers from the old Big East being joined by the University of Houston, Southern Methodist University, the University of Memphis, and Temple University, many pundits relegated the conference to that of a “mid-major.” Yet, the AAC has been a pleasant surprise in its inaugural college basketball season.

‘We've forgotten about the conversation’: HIV/AIDS still hits the South as awareness fades

45 years after the first reported cases of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., the fight against this disease is far from over, especially in the South. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the South accounted for 52% of all HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2023. "We know that HIV/AIDS has had a disproportionate effect on people of color or queer people of color in this country," Professor of communication studies at Vanderbilt University Jeff Bennett said. "You have many people living in rural areas. You might have distrust of medical providers, you have the social stigma.”
