The value of face-to-face communication

This week, I realized that most people don’t have an opinion (or have much to say) on an issue unless you put them in a spot where they really have to think about it and come up with an answer. Case in point: I was in Raleigh this weekend at my aunt and uncle’s house when my editor alerted me to the fact that I did not have any student input on the issue of construction on campus, and because The Pendulum is a student newspaper, student input is necessary, if not vital.

Elon's increase in donations follows national trend

Elon University's accumulation of annual donations are continuing to increase and are expected to meet the national average, which is currently 8.2 percent of the alumni community. According to a recent article in USA Today, donations have increased in recent years because of the decrease of government funding due to budget cuts.

Cost of tuition causes less money for financial aid

$38,460 is an ominous number. This is the total amount, including tuition, fees, room and board for an undergraduate to attend Elon University in the 2012-2013 school year. About 70 percent of Elon students receive some kind of scholarship, whether merit-based, need-based, talent-based or other, according to Patrick Murphy, director of financial planning. Both Murphy and Susan Klopman, vice president of admissions and financial planning, said the reason prices of scholarships aren’t as high is because the cost of tuition at Elon is lower than other similar private institutions.

There’s a man athletes all over the country want nothing to do with. His acquaintance is made out of necessity, not desire and his name alone sends shivers to those active in sport. His name is Dr. James Andrews, and Elon University pitcher Jim Stokes knows him all too well. Stokes was warming up in anticipation for his sophomore season on the diamond 14 months ago when things turned south.

Elon University men’s tennis coach Michael Leonard and lone senior Eric Turner might not have the same favorite moment of Turner’s career at Elon, but they both agree it’s been quite a run. Coach Leonard remembers a match two years ago in the 2010 Southern Conference tournament against undefeated, top-seeded College of Charleston.

But when women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Anderson won her 100th match as a coach when the Elon University team took down Wofford College 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center April 1, her players decided to change that. “We had all planned this after our match,” said senior Kaylyn Smialek.

For every positive moment on the diamond last week, there were many negatives for the Elon University baseball team. There was the injury to center fielder Niko Fraser at North Carolina April 4, a probable concussion which kept him out for the Furman series and has his status unknown for the upcoming week. There was disaster on the mound.
