NC abortion provision heads to appeals court

North Carolina is the catalyst for one of the first appeals court hearings on the constitutionality of “speech and display laws.” Speech and display laws require a patient seeking an abortion to receive an ultrasound beforehand while a doctor gives a medical description of the fetus displayed. A 2011 law in North Carolina contained a speech and display provision, which was deemed unconstitutional by U.S.

NCAA to allow Snapchat as recruiting tool for coaches

The world of college recruiting is about to get very interesting and a bit more personal. Now that the NCAA is allowing college coaches to communicate with prospects via Snapchat, getting a “selfie” from Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski could be in the cards for potential student-athletes. And if that happens, you better take a screenshot. This policy will officially start August 2014.

AAC basketball exceeding expectations in inaugural year

As the old Big East Conference split apart and the newly formed American Althletic Conference was formed with holdovers from the old Big East being joined by the University of Houston, Southern Methodist University, the University of Memphis, and Temple University, many pundits relegated the conference to that of a “mid-major.” Yet, the AAC has been a pleasant surprise in its inaugural college basketball season.

Campus flowers freeze in snow, low temperatures

The snowy weather may have closed school for students, but Elon's groundskeepers work extra hard to keep campus looking colorfully filled with flowers as the spring months quickly approach. Soon students, parents, faculty and staff will gather "Under the Oaks" for graduation and the landscaping team is working their hardest to keep the 30,000 pansies Elon has looking beautiful. "You know the term 'pansy' is like a wuss, but actually the pansy is a pretty tough flower," said groundskeeper Frank Clapp. Although students had many snowball fights and snowmen building competitions last week, the pansies will hopefully be able to survive. Clapp said that pansies should retain their durability and the snow should cause the flowers significant harm.

Synchronized skating shoots Lauren Snow to the top

While most encounter international competition through TV, one Elon student experienced it firsthand by competing with her synchronized skating team, Skyliners. Lauren Snow, a junior at Elon, began to skate when she was 3 years old and then started Synchronized Skating when she was 5 years old. "It was at my rink, I wanted to get involved with a team sport because I was tired of skating individually and that just seemed like the best fit," Snow said. What started out as a fun event held by her orthodontist turned into hard work and dedication. "I skated thirty hours a week: on ice, ballet training, off-ice training.

Lynch's walk-off in extras lifts Elon over Cincinnati

RALEIGH — Amid a bizarre week filled with snow and postponements, the sense of unpredictability hung around the Elon University baseball team during its season opener against the University of Cincinnati. With new players filling big shoes and others stepping up, the Phoenix earned a 6-5 victory in 10 innings at Doak Field at Dail Park on the campus of North Carolina State University. After surrendering a three-run lead with two outs in the ninth, it was sophomore catcher Danny Lynch who came through with a double to centerfield to score junior designated hitter Chris King in the bottom of the tenth for the victory. Lynch jumped on a two-strike changeup after a pitch that Lynch said hit him, but the umpires did not see. “I was just looking for a pitch to drive,” Lynch said.

Phoenix earns walk-off win at Hatter Invitational

The Elon University softball team split a doubleheader for the second straight day to finish 2-2 at the Hatter Invitational hosted by Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. Campbell 3, Elon 0 In its first game of the day, Elon struggled to get anything going offensively and spoiled a solid outing by junior starter Chelsea White in dropping a 3-0 decision to Campbell University. The Camels jumped out to a 1-0 lead on sophomore first baseman Courtney Klingler’s home run over the wall in left field during the second inning. After holding the Phoenix scoreless in the top of the third, Campbell added another run on freshman right fielder Milly Martinet’s double into left field to score junior short stop Ericka Nesbitt, giving the Camels a 2-0 lead. Neither team’s offense could muster a rally in the next inning, but in the fifth, the Camels scored their final run on junior center fielder Stephanie Jones’s double into right center, which scored junior third baseman Brittany Bruce and provided freshman starter Katie Baker with just enough runs to secure the victory. White (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season despite giving up just three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out one. Elon 8, Bethune-Cookman 7 (8 innings) In the second game of Elon’s doubleheader, the Phoenix bats came alive after staying silent for two straight games, spurring a thrilling comeback in extra innings to send the team back to North Carolina with something to smile about. Freshman starter Alli Burdette struggled early for the Phoenix, giving the Wildcats a run on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning which put Bethune-Cookman up 1-0. The Wildcats would add a second run in the inning on freshman center fielder Destinee Williams’ single to left, scoring freshman first baseman Sabrina Anguiano. In the fourth, freshman third baseman Kaitlin Alamprese singled down the left field line to score junior left fielder Calesha Shelley and Williams and give the Camels a 4-0 lead. But the Phoenix would respond.

Elon baseball moves games to NC State

The Elon University athletic department announced Saturday, February 15, that this weekend's baseball series against the University of Cincinnati will be played at North Carolina State University. Due to the recent inclement weather, the playing surface at Latham Park is still unplayable, Elon announced.

Phoenix splits opening games at Hatter Invitational

The Elon University softball team split the first two games of the Hatter Invitational at Stetson University in drastically different outcomes. The Phoenix used a strong performance on the mound and timely hitting to beat Bethune-Cookman University but then was dominated in every facet of the game in a loss to Stetson Feb.
