More than half the way through its second season as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), the Elon University volleyball team is 4-17.The Phoenix is struggling in what has been a rebuilding year after adding six new players — five of whom are freshmen. The team won its first conference match on Oct. 17 at the College of William & Mary. Head coach Mary Tendler believes that as the Phoenix learns to work together as a cohesive unit, the wins will follow. “We looked really confident [in the Oct. 8 match against the College of Charleston] in all situations,” Tendler said. “When you’re confident, you’re going to play well, and that showed. When we’re like that, we’re a tough team to beat.”
When Elon University men’s soccer head coach Chris Little is creating his starting lineup, he’s looking for a balance. “Our system isn’t really set up just for one player to be the guy scoring goals,” Little said.
For as long as he can remember, Luke Eddy has made countless layups over his basketball career. But on the night of December 20, 2014 against the UNCG Spartans, one layup changed his life forever. The Elon University women's soccer team struck first against the Drexel University Dragons, but a goals in regulation and then overtime spelled defeat for the Phoenix as Elon fell 2-1 in Philadelphia Sunday afternoon. Drexel freshman forward Vanessa Kara scored the game-winning goal for the Dragons in the 104th minute, her second of the match and as well as the second of two unanswered goals by Drexel.

The Elon University women’s soccer team gave up two goals in the span of 90 seconds in the first half of and couldn’t come back, losing 3-0 to the University of Delaware Friday night in Delaware. Junior forward Natalie Zelenky scored the first of her two goals in the 15th minute, scoring from eight yards out to give the Blue Hens an early lead.

Emotions always run high on a Senior Day, but they were cranked up an extra notch at the Oct. 11 Elon University women’s soccer team's match. Senior forward Nicole Dennion, former Southern Conference Player of the Year who missed last year while battling cancer, made her first appearance in two years by taking the opening kickoff in the lineup for the Phoenix. After kicking off the match, she ran to the sideline for a substitute to applause from both teams and fans. “An indescribable level [of emotion],” said head coach Chris Neal. “It was really good having her here.”

But Elon could not capitalize on the chances it had offensively early, and Richmond overpowered Elon’s defense en route to a 27-14 victory. Freshman outside hitter Kam Terry had a career night as the Elon University volleyball team fell to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival the College of Charleston 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24). Terry led the Phoenix offensively with 18 kills on the night and finished with 11 blocks in the match.
For many college athletes, freshman year represents a transition. There are new systems and plays to learn and in many instances, playing time is be limited.
The No. 13 ranked Elon University men’s soccer team returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Northeastern University, on a Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. “We played well, the second half particularly we created some really good chances,” said head coach Chris little.
The Elon University women's soccer team scored early and often Tuesday night, defeating Francis Marion University 6-0 in Florence, S.C., in a late non-conference matchup. Senior defender Mel Insley got the Phoenix on the board in the 14th minute, scoring her third goal of the season, on all free kicks.
When senior forward Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler arrived on Elon University’s campus in January 2015 he wasn’t alone. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill transfer not only joined eager new teammates but also enjoyed a homecoming of sorts with close friends and family. Though, Cooper has a new role for the Phoenix.
