Social upset in El Salvador El Salvador has been recognized as one of the most dangerous countries in Central America due to drug cartels and gang violence, but recently the death toll has dropped dramatically,  causing suspicion that the government has made secret agreements with the gang leaders to stop the killing. Neighboring countries’ authorities have accused the government of partnering with the drug cartels and gangs, which has caused distrust and unease throughout El Salvador.

Finding room in your closet for spring

As a student it is difficult to have clothes for all seasons because 1) if you live far away you have to have them all here and 2) dorms are not meant for that! Students struggle with this very dilemma every year of how am I going to fit all of my clothes in my closet, and then be able to decide what to wear if one day it is 70 degrees and the next it is in the 40s.

It's official: Elon adds women's lacrosse as official Division I sport

The Elon University Board of Trustees has made it official – there will be a Phoenix women’s lacrosse team. The program will begin play in the 2013-2014 season. “Women’s lacrosse is growing at an incredible pace, and we are excited to add this opportunity for Elon student-athletes,” said Dave Blank, director of athletics.

A fresh changing of the guard

From the beginning, he seemed to be overwhelmed by it all. I interviewed Elon freshman guard Austin Hamilton before the 2011-2012 men's basketball season about the schedule for the year. His quotes were somewhat short, but his enthusiasm was high. "One of the reasons I came here was in the past seasons, they played a really tough schedule, ACC teams and such," he said.

Student passion must be met with university commitment

At a recent rally against Amendment One to the North Carolina State Constitution, more than 100 students, faculty and staff showed up protesting the unfair disregard for the rights of LGBTQ citizens throughout the state. While the rights enjoyed by the LGBTQ community at Elon are not to be questioned, they have not been fully realized, because of the delay of the opening of the LGBTQ office, currently coordinated by Kirstin Ringelberg, associate professor of art history. In an interview with The Pendulum after taking over the position in August, Ringelberg acknowledged the challenges posed by the lack of a physical space. “The lack of visibility on campus is one of the things that allows our population to be invisible, and therefore to not be supported in the same way that it would be if it was more visible,” she said. That is not to say the LGBTQ community of students has not led the charge of the movement. This semester in The Pendulum, you’ve read about the Vote Against movement drumming up opposition to Amendment One, which would more strictly define marriage as only between a man and a woman. You’ve heard from junior Laura Sturm, who is single-handedly coordinating a proposal for gender-neutral housing to present to the university administration. You’ve scrolled through the QueErLON Blog, featuring real stories from your peers and professors about the LGBTQ community and its allies. But what remains noticeably absent is the physical office space promised to the Elon LGBTQ community.

Media misogyny hampers female equality

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh recently called out Georgetown University Law student Sandra Fluke for being a “slut” for publicly advocating student birth control rights should be covered under her Catholic institution’s health care plan.The media coverage of the incident exploded overnight. Political commentators right and left were quick to call out Limbaugh’s sexist flub, causing him to lose a significant amount of endorsement deals.

Elon University looks to dismiss lawsuit from former professor

Elon University is seeking dismissal of former Elon professor of accounting Ray Knight’s federal lawsuit, which he filed against the university on Feb. 6. Knight alleges the university retaliated against him for whistleblowing, wrongfully denied him tenure, wrongfully terminated his employment and violated both federal whistleblower protections and North Carolina public policy. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Elon University dances for a cause

Elon University’s Alumni Gym was transformed into a sea of energy April 11 as the community gathered for the 2026 Elonthon. The six-hour dance marathon, one of Elon’s many philanthropic events, brought students together to raise over $47,000 for Duke Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for children's hospitals in the U.S. and Canada.
