A resident of the Town of Elon was injured during a drive-by shooting at the intersection of South Church and Delaney streets Saturday afternoon. James Ricks, of Elon, was shot and treated at Alamance Regional Medical Center for an upper torso and arm injury.

A tight defensive battle, highlighted by a long touchdown run, leaves The Citadel with a 7-6 lead over Elon after the first half. In response to the recent issues of diversity and the campus response, SGA passed a bill Thursday intended to emphasize the organization's stance on the issue and to promote cultural awareness on campus. "Whereas The Elon University community was aghast at discriminatory acts on our own campus, whereas students, faculty, and staff have experienced a loss of comfort on their valued college community and whereas the SGA of Elon University believes in our university's mission statement which demands respect for human differences and promotes personal integrity," the bill reads. At the recent SGA retreat, the student government decided they wanted to be transparent and show they were making a strong stance against the incidents that occurred. "It shows constituents that we will not stand for something like this," said Greg Zitelli, vice president for the Class of 2014. With just two meets left before the Southern Conference championships, the Elon University women's cross country team got its first win ever on its home course in the Elon Invitational. This win is the second in a row for the women, and the importance of these wins in preparation for the SoCon is not lost on the runners, junior Emily Tryon said. "Every meet helps you work on our competitive edge," she said.

From the time he started playing soccer at age four, freshman forward Thorsten Pacher knew he wanted to continue playing the sport and be part of a soccer program at a university in the United States. Now, he's getting that chance. Pacher, a native of Rottenmann, Austria, has been playing soccer for 13 years and said he enjoys the sport even though it isn't popular in Austria. "Skiing is more popular in my country, but I started playing soccer with my friends," Pacher said.
Despite one loss while hosting the Elon Phoenix Classic Sept. 16-17, the Elon University volleyball team has completed its out of conference schedule and looks to begin its second season: Southern Conference play. At season's end, the women's soccer team will have a void to fill. There are only two seniors on the squad, but coach Chris Neal says the experience and leadership will be difficult to fill after the graduation of defender Andrea Keller and midfielder Noell McCain. The Elon University men's soccer team fought its way back from a 2-0 deficit against Old Dominion University and forced the nation's 11th-ranked team into an overtime period before losing 3-2 in an exciting finish Saturday night at Rudd Field. The comeback comes just one game before the team must begin its Southern Conference schedule. After trailing at halftime, the Phoenix came back to tie the game with goals by senior midfielder James Carroll and freshman defender Tommy Allen.

After Matt Matheny was hired in March 2009 as Elon University's 17th head basketball coach, he and athletic director Dave Blank discussed an innovative idea. "When we were discussing the possibility of this position back in 2009, we talked about a lot of things," said Matheny, who became the new coach after serving 16 years as an assistant at Davidson College.
