Learning to report on a controversial topic: Covering the GST proposal vote

Writing the article regarding the GST proposal vote required more reporting than I had originally thought it would, but I subsequently learned a significant amount about how decisions like these are made at Elon and why some people are more willing to talk about them than others.  It wasn’t until I learned how many years of work were put into the proposal that I realized how big of a vote this was, and the fact that it was put to a full faculty vote meant it was of extreme importance. Although I was hoping to attend the meeting during which the votes were cast, I was informed that the presence of a reporter might affect faculty participation in the discussion.  It would have been helpful to see the specifics as to how the meeting was run, who participated in the discussion, etc.  Instead, I knew that I would have to talk to faculty the following Monday. I wanted to get a range of faculty opinions on how they felt about the proposal being voted down, but getting clear answers from some faculty proved difficult.   I was constantly re-directed to different people to talk to, and some simply said they didn’t want to comment.  Although the majority of the faculty who participated in the vote voted the proposal down, no one I talked to would explicitly say they voted no. When it came to writing the story, it proved challenging to not have the story seem biased or one-sided because of the lack of sources I had that were against the proposal.  No further discussion was held immediately after the vote, so my first follow-up story consisted of two students’ opinions on the result of the vote.  I thought it was interesting that one of the students mentioned an over-arching concern regarding a lack of communication between faculty and students concerning these types of proposals/votes.  I think it is true that many students did not know about the GST proposal, which is one of the reasons why I was happy I got to write about it for The Pendulum.  I will be doing a second follow up for this weeks paper, which will include the specifics of what was discussed at various meetings following the vote. Oxford English Dictionary editor at large describes decades-long process of revision

Since its first publication in 1928, the Oxford English Dictionary — at 20 volumes, the most comprehensive historical dictionary in the world — has only been revised once in 1933, and republished once with supplemental material in 1979. And though Jesse Sheidlower's job as the dictionary's editor at large for North America is to spend his days updating, revising and adding new entries, there's no guarantee that there will ever be an OED 3.

Back to basics, football faces Furman

Three straight losses have left the Elon University football team in a hole with two games left against plus-.500 teams. Head coach Jason Swepson took the bye week to work on the essentials. "We did a lot of individual work and going back to the basics," Swepson said. That included not turning the ball over, tackling and blocking, he said. The Phoenix, 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference face Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Volleyball team fighting for playoff spot

Thanks in no small part to Georgia Southern University, the Elon University volleyball team's playoff odds took a turn for the better this weekend. While the Phoenix was busy sweeping its match against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the Eagles put a downer on Western Carolina University's Senior Night, helping the Phoenix get to within a game and a half of the Southern Conference North Division's final playoff spot. The weekend couldn't have started off worse for the Phoenix.

Alamance County community members gather to protest N.C. HB 958

The Poor People’s Campaign North Carolina Division hosted a protest against N.C. House Bill 958, a bill focused on new voting regulations, in front of Elon’s Town Hall. Approximately 40 community members attended the protest, which lasted around an hour Monday evening.

N.C. attorney general will not sign new Duke Energy settlement

North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is not joining a proposed settlement submitted by Duke Energy Carolinas, the largest electricity provider in Alamance County. Jackson acknowledged the concessions Duke Energy has made, but he was not satisfied with the proposed rates, according to a press release by the North Carolina Department of Justice.
