Something most of us did not predict or even know was feasible is the possibility that an American city can go bankrupt. The governor of Michigan announced the appointment of Kevin Orr, an emergency manager for the once prosperous city of Detroit. Municipal bankruptcies are rare.

The better making of Elon: Alpha Phi Alpha devotes week to serving, improving community

Last week, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. explored how to improve themselves and the community through five events focused around the theme “The Better Making of Men.” The fraternity, one of Elon’s six National Panhellenic Council organizations, hosted one of its two NPHC programming weeks this year, which often include service events, informational events and entertaining events, according to Alpha Phi Alpha president Kristopher Jiles. Jiles said the chapter wanted to use this week as a way to get its name out there because, while it is the largest NPHC organization with 11 members on campus this semester, it is smaller than every IFC and PHC organization at Elon. “My goal this week is to make sure we’re living up to the aims of our fraternity,” Jiles said.

Men’s basketball season ends on the road in CIT

The Elon University men’s basketball team went somewhere in 2013 they’ve never been before: a postseason tournament. On Wednesday, the dream of a postseason run came to an end in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y against Canisius College, 69-53. Elon only lead the Golden Griffins for two minutes forty-three seconds in the middle of the first half.

New A Capella Group: Smooth Progressions

Knowing the large amount of musical talent on Elon's campus, Montez Brown had a goal. Over the course of 29 days, he wanted to prepare his new all-male a capella group, Smooth Progressions, for the biggest A Capella show of the year - Accapalooza. "It was a bit of a time crunch because I had auditions for the group on February 16th," said Brown.

Former Elon football star stabbed

Scott Riddle, former star quarterback of the Elon football team, was stabbed in a fight outside an Asheboro night club around 2:20 Saturday morning, according to Asheboro police. Police say Riddle and another man, Dakota Ryan Parsons, were involved in a fight inside the night club,Shenanigans, before the manager threw them out.

Elon completes three game sweep of UNCG

On Friday, March 15, the Elon University baseball team sat 2-4 in Southern Conference play; a far cry from where they thought they would sit after a pair of conference series. For the first time since winning the opening game against the College of Charleston on March 8, Elon is over .500 in conference after completing the weekend sweep on the road at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In game one of Friday, March 15, Greensboro jumped on Elon starter Dylan Clark with four runs in the first two innings highlighted by back-to-back doubles by sophomore designated hitter Ray Crawford and senior center fielder Zach Leach. Between Greensboro’s four run outburst in the first two innings, junior catcher Ryan Kinsella launched his second home run in as many games over the left field fence to bring his season total to six. The two teams went scoreless through the third to the fifth inning and Greensboro starter Max Povse was sailing through five before the Elon bats erupted in the top of the sixth. Kinsella led off the inning with a double to left center and was brought home on sophomore second baseman Wil Leathers’ double down the left field line. After Danny Lynch walked, Povse was lifted for junior reliever Dylan Hathcock.

Charleston takes two of three from softball

Looking to bounce back from a weekend sweep at the hands of Georgia Southern University March 9-10, the Elon University softball team took the field for a doubleheader against the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon, March 16, then again for a single game Sunday, March 17.

With All-Star Weekend approaching, NBA teams are looking forward to the second half of the season. As teams look ahead, we will look back and evaluate the success of the major offseason moves. Los Angeles Lakers Acquisitions: C Dwight Howard, PG Steve Nash The Lakers made the biggest splash this past offseason, acquiring 3-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic, to go along with the signing of 2-time MVP Steve Nash.

NHL lockout is over, fans return excited yet hurt

It took 119 days, but the National Hockey League (NHL) lockout did eventually end. Once the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) had expired, franchise owners and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman argued with the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) over financial issues.
