Recent incident reveals underlying, ongoing racial tensions

On the morning of Sept. 17, two female students, one Jewish and one African-American, woke up to a swastika, the acronym “KKK” and a sketch of male genitalia drawn on the whiteboard outside their room. “I’m tired of it,” said senior Immanuel Bryant, one of two founding leaders of Better Together, Elon’s multi-faith learning community.

Lakeside Dining Hall Receives Below Average Health Rating

Fresh off an 82 for Colonnades Dining Hall, Elon Dining is taking another blow this week. The newest dining hall on campus, Lakeside Dining Hall, earned a below average score from the Alamance County Health Department after it was inspected on September 25th. Lakeside Dining Hall, which according to the ratings includes the Winter Garden Cafe, was given a final score of 90. Officials from the Alamance County Health Department told ELN that the average score for Alamance County restaurants over the past five years is 97.4. According to the inspection record, several food items had expired and had to be thrown away. The soup well lacked a sneeze guard and the main floor drain in the dish room was backed up during the inspection, leaving standing waste water on floor. Two employees were written up for having long facial hair. Regional District Manager of Aramark, Jeff Gazda, told ELN on the phone Monday that Elon Dining is striving for a higher level of sanitation. According to Gazda, the university wants all dining facilities at a 95 or above.

Former Elon Football Player Arrested On Drug Charges

Former Elon Football Defensive Back, Jerrell Armstrong was arrested Tuesday evening for felony possession of marijuana. According to the police report, Armstrong was stopped on East Haggard Avenue last Tuesday night for speeding and a headlamp violation. Elon Athletics told ELN that Armstrong was dismissed from the team on September 16 for violating team rules and he is no longer enrolled at Elon University. The report says Armstrong was "acting nervous and denied consent to search the vehicle." After a K-9 unit was called in, police say they found 29.3 grams of marijuana in the back pocket of the front passenger seat. Armstrong was transported to Alamance County Jail in Graham and is being held on an $800 bond. He is due in court on December 11. [div class="aligncenter"][/div]

Optimism still surrounds Elon football's final SoCon slate

With a 1-4 record entering a lame duck season of play in the Southern Conference, one would not think that the Elon University football team would have much motivation for the final seven games. But this squad is unique. Head coach Jason Swepson’s team will play solely SoCon games for the rest of the season, the Phoenix’s last season in the league before moving to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in 2014.

Pesky Colts are surprising the NFL yet again in 2013

As usual, the NFL is off to a very confusing start. The Kansas City Chiefs, the worst team by record last year, are undefeated despite the woes of its offensive line, a supposed strength at the start of the season. The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking at a potential clean-house scenario in the offseason, the worst possible scenario for a club that prides itself on stability and constant championship contention. And the Indianapolis Colts, everyone’s favorite candidate for regression in 2013, just blew out the San Francisco 49ers, the defending NFC champions.

‘I feel like I had been pulled out of my life’: Elon University student returns to campus after battling sepsis

Elon University junior Jackson Weber was wrestling with a friend when he tore his ACL in Nov. 2023, an injury that completely changed what he thought his college career would be like. When Weber entered Elon University, students could find him on the football field and basketball courts stunting for the Elon cheerleading team. The first time he tore his ACL in his sophomore year, he had decided to just take Winter Term off. Going into Spring Term, he expected to make a full recovery.

Record-breaking Elon University track star reflects on collegiate career

As Elon University’s women’s track and field team continues its season, redshirt junior Katie Blount is leaning on consistency, community and mental toughness while continuing to add to her record-breaking resume. She has been named the All-Coastal Athletic Association outdoor runner in 2023 and 2024 as well as breaking Elon University’s 5k and 6k records this year in cross country. Blount said it being a college athlete is about drive. She said she thinks if an athlete commits and puts their mind to it then they can excel in any sport.
