Josh Stein projected governor of North Carolina

AP News has called North Carolina’s governor race in favor of Democratic candidate and Attorney General Josh Stein. With 23% of the votes counted, Stein has a 52.7% lead. Robinson has 42.6% of the vote. Stein beat Lt. Gov. and Republican candidate Mark Robinson with a steady lead in a race defined by starkly opposed campaigns. Projected ahead of Robinson in the last three Elon Poll surveys, Stein’s victory maintains the divide between North Carolina’s Republican-majority General Assembly.

Elon Votes hosts election night watch party

Roughly 55 students are gathering in the Global Commons Great Hall for an election night watch party hosted by Elon Votes and funded by the Student Government Association from 8 to 11 p.m. Junior Emily Stuart, co-lead civic engagement ambassador with Elon Votes, said events like this are important to bring students together. North Carolina is among the seven battleground states that will help decide the outcome of the presidential race, making this an important night for many Elon students. Freshman and North Carolina native Isis Ruiz-Nunez said she chose to attend the watch party because of the community support.

Mark Robinson hosts watch party in Raleigh ahead of election results

Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson held a watch party at the City Club in Raleigh for the gubernatorial race. With the race called for Attorney General Josh Stein, Robinson has conceded the governorship. Robinson addressed the crowd at 9:04 p.m. saying he is still proud of the work he has done as lieutenant governor of North Carolina in spite of the loss. Throughout Robinson's address the crowd of supporters cheered for him and thanked him for running in the governor election.

North Carolina Democrats, Stein await election results

In preparation for election results, particularly the results of the gubernatorial race, the North Carolina Democratic Party is hosting a watch party in Raleigh at the Marriott City Center. Attorney General Josh Stein and several key North Carolinian Democrats are expected to appear. As of 8:15 p.m., the event is in full swing. Droves of people, almost 100 so far, are piling in to see Stein and other Democratic politicians speak later. Gil Genn, a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates, is at the event and said he is most excited to see a transition from the old tonight.

Elon University men’s basketball gives North Carolina scare but falls short in season opener

Light shows, a roaring crowd and a swarm of Carolina blue: It all seemed too much for the Phoenix to handle. The Elon University men’s basketball team stayed strong despite the adversity, giving the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill a scare but lost its season opener 90-76. It was their 13th loss when starting the season away from home, but it was a promising performance against the 9th ranked team in the nation and a sign of a bright future for the program. Elon started the season with nine returning players and brought back 54% of its scoring from last season.

Election Day 2024: morning of general elections in Elon, Alamance County, North Carolina

Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. today for one of the most historic general elections in U.S. history. If elected, former President Donald Trump would be the second president in history to win his bid after losing a first attempt at reelection — and will have done so after being the first former president to be convicted of a crime. If Vice President Kamala Harris is elected, she will be the first woman to serve as president of the U.S. North Carolina also plays a pivotal role in this election as one of seven crucial battleground states.

Polls closed at 7:30 p.m. In addition to North Carolina's gubernatorial race, Elon News Network will be providing live updates for every election in North Carolina and Alamance County. With 0 out of 39 precincts counted at 7:30 p.m., ENN has already made projections for the winners of uncontested races. Reporters are also reporting live from Raleigh, where both Attorney General Josh Stein and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson are hosting watch parties for the state's governor race. ENN will also be reporting from the Alamance County's Democratic Watch Party and Alamance County's Republican Headquarters.

Fourth quarter surge gives Elon University women’s basketball season opener win

The Elon University women’s basketball team defeated High Point University 66-65 to win its first game of the season Nov. 4. It was a roller coaster game as a hot start turned into a 15-point deficit in the third quarter. However, hot fourth quarter shooting proved to be the difference in a thrilling opening night victory. The Phoenix went into the season hoping to improve on its 11-21 record last year and wasted no time getting ahead in the opening minutes. They jumped out to a 15-7 lead thanks to redshirt sophomore guard Raven Preston.

oSTEM returns to campus after 2 years

With senior Maria Ledin leading as president of oSTEM this year, they aim to change the status of the organization to have more presence on campus. For the past two years, oSTEM was not active on Elon’s campus. After complications with the COVID-19 pandemic and a leadership team that had mostly graduated, the organization temporarily disappeared. Ledin said they were inspired to jumpstart the organization in part because they knew of individuals on campus that could and would benefit from the space that oSTEM provides.

Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson makes campaign stop in Elon

With the 2024 general election less than two days away, Lt.  Gov. Mark Robinson held a rally at the Ace Speedway in Elon to push supporters to vote Republican down the ballot on Nov. 5. Robinson announced his gubernatorial bid in the same location just a year and a half earlier. Despite the majority of the attendees stating that they voted early, Robinson and other Republican candidates in races across North Carolina — including Bryan Ray, Chad Brown and Michele Morrow —  encouraged attendees to tell others to vote Republican.

Elon Athletics has mixed results with Ticketmaster partnership

According to Elon Athletics, 1,119 students used Ticketmaster on Sept. 14 against Western Carolina, whereas the estimated total student attendance was 1,519. Similarly, 427 students used Ticketmaster to attend the Sept. 21 game against East Tennessee State University, but a total of 927 were estimated to attend. On Family Weekend against Richmond University, many students entered with their families and just showed their ID without claiming their ticket through Ticketmaster. The number was massively skewed with 2,114 total students attending. but only 536 using Ticketmaster.

Elon University football dominates on 2024 Homecoming Weekend

On Homecoming Weekend 2024, Elon University’s football team exploded for an offensive clinic. Elon beat Campbell University 50-27 thanks to the efforts of two career days. Senior Rushawn Baker had a career high with 154 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. Redshirt senior Chandler Brayboy had a career day in his 309 all-purpose yards. Elon has struggled this year, having gone 3-6 and only finding their first home win of the season against Campbell, but much of it has been due to the team being handed the 17th hardest schedule in the FCS.

Elon Club Baseball dedicates dugouts to former player who died 2 years ago

Scott Yelle said it is always bittersweet returning to Elon’s campus, because he wouldn’t be visiting club baseball’s game Nov. 2 if his son was still alive. His son, Jackson Yelle, was a former junior at Elon who was killed in a hit-and-run in April 2023 on a beach trip with the rest of the club baseball team. Scott and his wife Andrea Yelle have been back to campus multiple times to see members of the club baseball team and other friends of Jackson’s. This time, they came back to see the dedication of the field’s dugouts to their son before the team played against William and Mary.

Town of Elon Police releases statement regarding Halloween festivities at Oak Hill Apartments

Ahead of Homecoming and Halloween festivities, town of Elon Police released a statement to the residents of Oak Hill Apartments stating they have been made aware of a planned, large-scale party rumored to take place within the apartment complex Nov. 2. The memorandum, released Oct. 28, also stated that if such a gathering occurs, those who are responsible may be subject to legal action including criminal charges and fines. Assistant Elon Police Chief Kedrick King said the decision to release the memorandum was based on previous incidents that have taken place at Oak Hill.

Alamance, Guilford juvenile detention rates reach highest in more than a decade

Steven Isaiah Bradshaw was 11 years old the first time he went to Guilford Detention Center. He was detained again at 13, 16 and 18 years old for various robbery and gun charges. Matthew Cappello, Alamance County’s lead juvenile court counselor, said recidivism — or the likelihood of criminal offenders reoffending — is one of the state’s biggest concerns within the juvenile and criminal justice systems. In 2023, recidivism reached 80% for prisoners with juvenile records in the United States. To combat this, Cappello said North Carolina has made it a priority to invest in diversion and restoration resources rather than punishment and deterrence techniques such as detainment.

Elon University women’s cross country ends streak of 5 consecutive CAA Championship wins

After winning the last five Coastal Athletic Association Championships, the Elon University women’s cross country team has ended the streak, finishing third overall at the 2024 CAA Championship on Nov. 1. The men’s team improved from its sixth place finish last year, finishing fifth. The men’s 8k and women’s 6k races took place at the Elon Cross Country Course. The ending of the women’s streak comes amid the first season of head coach Mark Rinker after former coach Kevin Jermyn left for Duke University. Jones said the team wasn’t focused on continuing the streak, but rather performing as a team.

Elon University launches Law Flex, sports management programs in Charlotte

Elon University's campus in Charlotte has launched its new Flex Law Flex Program this fall. Alan Woodleif, vice dean of Elon Law, said the program has already exceeded its enrollment goal of 35 students for the first year. Sitting at 36 students, Woodleif said the program projects a class size between 35 and 40 for several years to come. Woodlief also said in order for the program to be successful, he wants to focus on incremental, slow growth.

Shots fired in Elon; suspect identified

Matthew Dylan Earnhardt, 23, of Winston Salem, was arrested Nov. 1 and faces five misdemeanor charges — including discharging a firearm, concealing a weapon, possession of marijuana and marijuana-related items, and communicating threats. At 1:41 a.m. Nov. 1, an E-Alert reported that shots had been fired in the area of Elon University. A follow up was sent at 1:54 a.m. saying law enforcement had “suspects in custody” and there were no further threats to campus. Court documents also indicate that Earnhardt had made threats to an individual — identified by Elon News Network as an Elon University student.

Hurricane Helene relief through lens of Black Hawk mission

After Hurricane Helene, rural communities continue to struggle with isolation in western North Carolina. A National Guard Black Hawk crew delivered generators to the Bull Creek community, a valley banding together in the aftermath of the storm, on Oct. 8. The National Guard has been working to sustain the recovery of western North Carolina’s fragmented pockets. After Hurricane Helene hit Sept. 27, much of the infrastructure throughout North Carolina was severed. At the storm's peak, there were hundreds of closures. Sections of I-40 still face significant damage, while power and clean drinking water are still issues.

Board of Trustees appoints first graduate program alumna as youth trustee

Elizabeth “Liz” Kwon L’23 has been named the new youth trustee for Elon University’s Board of Trustees. Kwon found out she was nominated by a faculty member when she graduated in December 2023. She is the first alum of a graduate program to be appointed to the board and will serve a two-year term. As the first graduate student to be elected as a youth trustee, Kwon said she hopes to bring the graduate student perspective to the table — as well as her personal experiences in the law program.
