New HealthEU building sees phased construction process

The new HealthEU building, recently named the Slattery Center, has reached its tallest point as it nears its anticipated grand opening in fall 2026. On the north side of the building, facing the Colonnades Neighborhood, workers have begun laying the traditional Elon red brick on the structure's outer walls. The south side has a finished structure, but no exterior walls have been added as of May 5.

County commissioners shape Alamance beyond meeting rooms

With landfill debates and local boards, the Alamance County board of commissioners makes decisions that shape policies affecting residents across the county. The board is made up of five elected officials: Chair Kelly Allen, Vice Chair Steve Carter, Ed Priola, Sam Powell and Pamela Thompson. Commissioners are elected to four-year terms, with seats appearing on the ballot during general election cycles.

Educators march through downtown Raleigh to demand action

The front lawn of the North Carolina Legislative Building in downtown Raleigh on May 1 was filled with the voices of frustrated educators and their supporters. The North Carolina Association of Educators held a rally at Halifax Mall, bringing together representatives from 18 school districts across the state, including Alamance County. Attendees said they came to advocate for increased funding for public schools and to push lawmakers to pass a long-delayed state budget.

Elon Community Garden hosts annual Strawberry Festival

Elon Community Garden hosted its annual Strawberry Festival on May 1. Students and community members were able to enjoy lemonade, ice cream and live music and more activities. Students and attendees were able to adopt a plant, a tradition for the festival, and also got to enjoy balloon flowers, a strawberry hunt and painting tote bags. Later in the festival attendees got to sit down and enjoy live music.

Limitless showcase brings hip-hop, R&B, community to Elon stage

Student performers took the stage April 30 at College Street Tap House as Limitless, Elon University’s hip-hop and R&B organization, hosted its 7th showcase. The event featured a lineup of student and local artists, combining rap, R&B and alternative sounds in what organizers describe as both a performance and a platform for creative growth.

New Odyssey Program director to promote community learning and advocacy

On June 1, Mat Gendle will become the director of Elon’s Odyssey Program, which offers scholarships and expanded opportunities to high-achieving Elon students with high financial need. Gendle will be the third person to step into the role within the last year, following one director’s termination and the other’s decision to leave the university to pursue her PHD.

CrossRoads organizes Denim Day dinner, fashion show

On April 29, over 200 attendees filled the Ramada Inn Convention Center for CrossRoads’ annual Denim Day dinner and fashion show. The event was primarily a fundraiser for CrossRoads Sexual Assault Response & Resource Center, with sponsors, raffles and on-site donations encouraged, but it also served to unite the Alamance area around sexual assault prevention.

Fire code violations strain university, town relations

The town of Elon and Elon university are mending relationships and working on more effective communication following a dispute that prompted Elon University to halt all payments to the town. The rollout of a new fire inspection process revealed code violations, which the university had not addressed.

Elon alums share first-hand reactions to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting

Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday evening. There were over 2,000 people at the dinner, including Elon alums. Seated on the ground level, Annemarie Bonner ‘23 said she first wasn’t sure what she had heard, but when she realized it was gunshots, the night turned into her worst nightmare.
